I’ll be at the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games next weekend, August 9-11! (Well, I’ll actually be in evidence only on the 10th and 11th, but there are public events on Friday—the “Heavy” competitions, and the Tattoo—that you may be interested in as well.) The official website is here, but the part of the schedule that applies specifically to my own appearances is listed below:

Saturday, August 10

Doors Open: 8:00am
8:30am- Fergus Scottish Festival, Diana Gabaldon & the Ladies of Lallybroch through the ages. ~ Lynn Boland Richardson
9:00am-10:00am – Diana Gabaldon
10:00am- Booksigning and Photo Opportunities

1:30pm- Fergus Scottish Festival, Diana Gabaldon & the Ladies of Lallybroch through the ages. ~ Lynn Boland Richardson
2:00pm-3:00pm- Diana Gabaldon
3:00pm- Booksigning and Photo Opportunities
Sunday, August 11
Doors Open: 9:00am

2:30pm-3:30pm- Diana Gabaldon
3:30pm-6:00pm Booksigning and Photo Opportunities

[I’ll also be doing the Opening Ceremonies onstage at the field, mid-day on Saturday. The bookstore is open Friday from 4-6 PM, but there are no formal events on Friday, bar (I think) a ceildih in the evening. Check the official website for more details: http://www.fergusscottishfestival.com/

NO, you won’t get advance copies of MOBY—I haven’t finished writing it yet [g], and it doesn’t come out until next March, in order to coordinate with the (hoped-for) launch of the STARZ TV series. BUT…you _will_ get free (yes, FREE!! [g]) copies of the advance Excerpt Booklet, which includes the first seven chapters of the book. Random House Canada said they’re printing several thousand, so there should be plenty for everyone who wants one.

(And no, sorry—Sam Heughan will _not_ be joining me.)

  1. Evangeline Lilly would make an excellent Claire

  2. Sounds like a fun event–hope you have a great time!

  3. I wish I could make it!!! I love the books and festivals are the best!!! When can we expect a visit in the US? I lost my signed copy of Outlander on a plane some years ago and really would love to get my replacement copy signed.

    • Dear Olita–

I _live_ in the US, and do events there all the time. If you check this site, you’ll see a list of “Appearances,” which is updated whenever I think about it. [g]

  4. New Mexico!!! Hope I can make it out there.

  5. It sounds like the Ladies of Lallybrook are going to be active in your programs. Love their site and I contribute to their annual Christmas/Birthday gift for my favorite author.

    • Safe travels to and from Fergus! I had to laugh with the announcement that Sam would not be with you. All that he had to say was that he was going to be in Canada and lots of folks jumped to the conclusion that he would be appearing with you. The poor lad is going to have to beat them off with a stick….or a sausage. *G*
I wish I could be in Fergus too, but unless they perfect a transporter beam, I’ll have to be content with other venues.

  6. Hi Dana, I just finished rereading the Outlander series for the umteeth time.. I always notice something I had not noticed in previous reads which is one thing that makes your books a joy to read. However, I am not getting any younger lol (67) . I notice you have Prequel listed on the Outlander series title list and no title yet. I am desperately afraid I will die before the series comes to a close. No I am not sick and in good health still…. I wait with baited breath..

I know you need to travel but I do wish you would stay home more and write. I know that is selfish but it takes you so long to write one and that is one thing that makes the series so wonderful … your attention to detail.

One last item: I live in a small house with limited space and only buy books in mass market paperback. I cannot find The Scottish Prisoner in the mass market size only trade paper. Also price is a consideration as books are my weakness. Please tell me your publisher is going to continue publishing in this size..

  7. Wow!! You’re actually coming to the town where I spent my high school years. (Many years ago). Haven’t been to the Highland Games in years. Your presence there makes me want to visit again. Hope we can make it and I have a chance to meet you. Take care and enjoy!

  8. Oh, how I wish I could make this event. I live approximately 14 hours away, but we just purchased a home (in need of many renovations), and have a very young daughter (who may be reluctant to stand in line for more than 5 minutes; even if it is for you, Diana)…

What I’d like to know is if you do this event annually? If so, I might be able to make it next year. This would also offer me the opportunity to re-read all the books AND get my copy of MOBY in March. It’s a wonderful idea, don’t you think? :)

I hope you enjoy your time in Canada. Be sure to dress warm; we haven’t had much of a summer this year.

  9. I’ll be seeing you there!
Thank you for coming to Southern Ontario

  10. Hello Diana

Well THANK YOU! I have so enjoyed your extraordinary Outlander series to date, and am now working my way through the Lord John Novellas, numerous Bulges, and Collections. Filling in the lacunas, and thoroughly enjoying other reading around the time period, geographies and his- (and her-) stories that you bring so vividly to life.

I have a busy life, full and rich; my husband and I live and work our organic heritage fruit tree nursery and orchard in the green countryside, beside a river in the North Island of New Zealand. Also very involved in the arts and sustainable environmental matters.

Now though, I have to say that my mouth is almost watering in anticipation of your next Outlander novel ‘Written in My Own Heart’s Blood’. Is it at all possible that I might procure one of the Short Excerpts you have produced for the Fergus Festival, perhaps in an e-book format??

  11. Can’t wait to see you again at Fergus and get another copy of Outlander signed. I very foolishly loaned out my last autographed copy to a good friend who said she realized the importance of getting the book back to me.
Yeah, whatever. She has no recollection of the book or promise.

  12. Just back from my Outlander tour of Scotland! Finding the Clan Frasier stone at Culloden was one of the highlights of my visit. Wish I could have been there while you ere doing this, though.

  13. Hi Diana. Welcome to Ontario I hope you have a great time in Ferguson. Thank you for all the wonderful updates. Wish I could be in Ferguson this weekend.

  14. I hope you have a great time, I can not be there its a long way from Woking in Surrey England even to see you. But I will be there is spirit.

  15. Have a lovely time. The rains have passed on through and I hope a light wind blows the humidity away as well. I never realized how used to it we are until I was in AZ and hearing the locals complain about th 35% as ‘high humidity’!

  16. I know this isn’t related but do you have any idea when your book on writing (how you write) is coming out? I would love to preorder it if I can.

  17. So happy you are coming to Canada!

  18. Hi Diana, one more sleep! I’m so excited! I am coming to the Highland Games to see & hear you.
I just finished A Leaf on The Wind of All Hallows………enjoyed it so much. You may be the only
writer who cures writers block with more writing. I am giddy, as a school girl, with prospect of
    meeting you.
    Teresa from Kitchener.

  19. Hi Diana,
I was very excited to have seen you on Sunday in Fergus. I was absolutely starstruck to the point where I couldn’t even put a coherent sentence together. Thank you for writing such a beautiful story with characters who all have such depth to them. It is like they are part of the family…one feels like they know them so intimately…I admit that like others, I am going through withdrawal, but thrilled to know there will be more to come. March will be here soon enough. You were absolutely lovely and certainly made my day.
    Liz from Caledonia, ON

    • Diana, I, too ,was reducced to a blathering fool upon seeing and meeting you. I have that dazed , deer in the headlights, look in my picture with you. LOL. You spoke, on Sunday am. about some of the presents that fans have given you. Sunday morning I suddenly felt that I must have a gift for you. I thought hair
products (I am a stylist) because your hair is always long & lovely ……something that you could use.
Flowers were a consideration since I have a large perenial garden………a nice addition to your book
signing table. I couldn’t decide and went empty handed.
Diana, I think that your fans want to give you presents beacause you have given them (us) so much!
The payment that you receive for your books is not enough, in our eyes, for that deep personal connection
that you have forged with your readers. Plus you are so lovely and gracious…..you deserve presents!

The Fergus Highland Games was a great experience! I think that I saw Murtagh.

      Teresa Ktchener On.

  20. Hi Diana,
I’m thrilled to have seen you in Fergus, ON today. Yes, it is worth the trip to Fergus. You were very funny, humble and informative. I can’t wait for the next book to come out and to start watching the television adaptation. I am going to start reading the series again from the beginning this week so I will be dreaming of men in kilts. Thank you for being so gracious and making your readers feel special.

  21. Saw Diana give her talk in Fergus on Saturday, it was amazing! I have never been so engaged in a author’s forum about their books, although never have I seen any other of my favourite authors in person either. But she was witty, smart, and above all the voice of Claire/Jamie et all that shines through in her speaking of them like old friends (which for all of her readers they are). A tremendous personal story that lead up to these awesome books. I did not expect that she would be so engaging and personable even when speaking to a room with hundreds of people in it. And even cooler on the tech/computer side of her story that I had no idea about!

She is Even Cooler in Person!

  22. Dear Diana,

I am very relieved to find out that there is a next book coming in The Outlander Series! I have read the first seven books and loved them. I couldn’t believe that you would leave all this hanging….and, you haven’t!:)

I personally am just not that thrilled about graphic books…. and love your writing….sooooo- I will await the new one next March. How does one sign up for the free excerpts, and when does that happen?

I have some Scottish Ancestry, so was delighted when a friend told me about your series, months ago, now. I’ve even tried drinking some Scotch, just for fun….(it’s too strong for me-)….

Anyway, thanks for a great series, and all the best in writing the next book!

    Alexandra MacLean Hawley

  23. I want to thank you again for coming to the games in Fergus. I appreciate the time you took to answer my question when you must have been very tired after signing so many books. Hope to see you again in two years.

  24. It was great seeing you again at Fergus. I am sorry for inconvenient in giving you a wee Lego gift. I do know it wasn’t ideal to give gifts at signing events and the trouble of taking them back home. I only thought it was just tiny enough to carry. No matter I will be just more happy if you already gave it to someone you know that would love to have it. Thank you so much for coming to Fergus and will see you again in 2015 (hopefully this time I ll be able to see a naked Scot running in the field! Just heard they said there was one on Sat night?)! Smile.

  25. Thank you, again, for joining us at dinner on Saturday evening. It was a great pleasure for Ed & I to sit at the head table with you and your DH. I so enjoy watching you and your DH interact, whether laughing together or sending private messages with eyes and body language. You are so good together . No wonder Claire and Jamie’s marriage works so well. I suspect that in many ways you are using examples of issues from your own marriage to fill in the private lives of Claire & Jamie.

Looking forward to seeing you again in 2015. We enjoyed exceptional weather this year – no rain to speak of, not too hot and dusty, lots of big puffy clouds. If only the mosquitoes hadn’t swarmed us during/after dinner. Hope you didn’t end up needing a transfusion after all that blood loss.

    • Dear Cathy–

It was great fun to share supper with y’all! Thanks to Michelle’s giant bottle of DEET (I bathed in the stuff), I was only bitten once.

  26. I Dianna, I live in Australia & was wondering about the excerpt booklet that was going to be hand out at the Fergus (ontario) Scottish Festival.
Is there any way I could get my hands on one of those?????????

    • Dear Cynthia–

The excerpt booklets are done as a promotion by the US and Candian publishers (both Random House)–to be given away at large events, like Fergus, or (closer to the book’s pub date) distributed free in bookstores. Don’t really know how you’d get hold of one, save by making friends with an American or Canadian who’d send you one, though.

      • Hello,

Will the audio version of MOBY be out the same day as the print version? And will it be narrated by the incomparable Davina Porter? I hope for a “yes” to both!

        Thank you,

  27. From all the wonderful pictures and stories I am seeing from my Lallyfamily, it sounds like it was a fantastic weekend!

I was wondering if all the free Excerpt copies of MOBY were given away. Is there any way to get a copy?

Loving the casting so far for the Starz series!

  28. Dear Diane,
I am a huge fan of the “Outlander Series” and have been waiting like a child at Christmas for your next book “In My Hearts Blood” to be released. My friends and daughters share my enthusiasm. My concern is for the series to be released on Starz, I hope you have a great deal of control over the script content and other details around the series. I have found that so many books, when they make it to the big or small screen, seem to lose the integrity and detail that made the books so good. I am sure you know what I mean by this. I was also a fan of Josh Whedon’s, ” Firefly” but when it was distributed it was done out of order and eventually cancelled. It became famous after the cancellation. An artist, such as yourself, is busy creating art and not able to control factors that diminish that art. I really hope that “Outlander” does not fall prey to these factors and those that have not read your books will be inspired as those of us that have read your art. Best wishes and Thank you for your artistry.

  29. we need real Scottish actors and Jamie and Brianna need to have red hair or the story is ruined the books were brilliant don’t want the story to be rubbish on tv hopefully they wont change to much

  30. Consider Alicia Menshew as Claire.

  31. Hi Diana,

Thank you soo much for all the amazing work that you do! I really love it!

I was just wondering if you could mention the Second Oulandish companion? I know that you mentioned earlier that its in the works…is this still the case? Have you enjoyed some sections of it particularly?

    Kindest regards,

  32. Whoops my fingers are keyboard fatigued and left out the letter T from previous post, …i meant Outlansish Companion numero dos!

  33. Will the advance 7 chapter excerpt be available online for us to read? ty.

  34. Hi Diana,

My future wife loves you and your books. We have several copies of each including the worn out ones that she just can’t let go of because they were the firsts. I’ve gotten to take her to Scotland and the Clava Cairns and I swear that was the happiest she’s ever been on a trip.

If there were any way for you to send her a note or anything she would be over the moon (and it would help me in taking one more step towards living up to Jamie!)

  35. Any chance you will be coming to the Great Lakes area? You have many fans in the Ohio/ Michigan area who would love a chance to see you! Most of your appearances are too far away for us to come to!

    • Dear Angela–

Probably not in the immediate future. It’s a beautiful area–and they _do_ send me to Chicago once in awhile [g]–but the bottom line is that there’s only one of me and I just can’t be everywhere.

  36. Hi Diana,

I like so many people can’t wait for book 8 and hope that time will crawl by at a faster pace till it is released. I live in Idaho and not a lot of tours come this way.

I am amazed at how many projects you work on and finish at the same time. I herd that you were going to work on a second outlandish companion book and wondered if that was still in the works.

    Thank you,

    • Dear Chris–

Yes, the second volume of THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION is kind of standing by, waiting ’til I’ve finished writing MOBY, but should be out fairly soon after that!

  37. I am so excited for the release of MOBY, although March seems so far away. You had a previous release date of December 10th which I was so excited about because that was my birthday.

I can’t wait to watch the Outlander Series and love the actors that have been chosen mostly because you had a say in choosing them and also because Sam Heughan is real life Scotsman! Whenever I hear the song “Gone, Gone, Gone” by Phillip Phillips, it makes me think of Jamie and Claire. When you get a chance, listen to it. I can picture the whole trailer for the miniseries in my head when I sing it everyday on my way to work!

Thank you for all of your efforts!!! I just hope you will continue to be a part of the descionmaking process for the miniseries.

  38. I only wished I had checked up on your blog sooner! I can’t believe I had the chance to see you only an hour away! I just recently named my cat Fergus if that gives any content to my: a) geography and b) enjoyment of your characters! My husband threatens to call our next child Fergus,…but that could be odd after a cat having the same name under the same roof. AND, I did love your books so much that I was on a bit of a Scottish kick when I had my twins, Ewan and Fiona, but thankfully our last name is Scottish so it wasn’t much of a stretch. Well, I guess I will just have to take the twins under the guise of visiting the Fergus highland games another year!

Best of luck on the Starz series…I know I will be watching it!

  39. On Twitter, I keep seeing references to “Thru the Stones”. Have I missed something here. Is it a new Novella?

  40. Love the series (began and ended the 7 this year).
Just a plea to DG to consider the actual manifestations of moon phase and tides on the lives of the characters and actions which people the books.

  41. Hi Diana,
Love your books and have converted loads of readers to the Outlander experiences. My query is I know the 8th book (MOBY) is due to be released in March 2014 in America do you know the release date for Australia?
    Thanks Tanya

  42. My husband and I just came back from a month traveling through Scotland.
Visiting Falkirk we couldn’t go on for a short while.
    Due to filming in Progress.
No not for the Outlander serie, but for Silence Witness.
But when we went into a shop, one of the crew members just bought some coffee and cakes, talked to the shopowner.
She mentioned that there would be more filming in October.
When I asked her if this as for the Outlander serie, she asked me how I knew.
When I told her that I have all your books and was looking on line when your next book would be out.
That is where I saw all the information about the tv series.
She hadn’t read any of your books, and was trying to get hold of them.
And after I told her a tiny bit, she became more interested in your books.
I liked all your books, and I hope that the serie lives up to the books.

    Good luck.

  43. “The eighth installment of the “Outlander” series is slated to be released March 25th, 2014.”

I know this is a feeble beg .. but I need to do it all the same … it would be so very nice if that date could come forward by a week .. even 5 days .. I’ll be in the U.S. in March but leave on the 20th .. I’d so LOVE to be buying it before I leave!! It is the ultimate tease!

    • Dear Elly–

I’m afraid it’s beyond my power to alter a pub date (these are decided on by a process only slightly complex than reading pigeon entrails by moonlight in Times Square), but there are occasional “early” copies (usually ones sent to reviewers or bloggers) that slip out and onto eBay a few days in advance.

  44. I have just realized that there have not been very many daily lines about Roger and Buck back in the 18th century. Please, please tell me that Roger gets back to his family in MOBY. That would be such a downer if he does not!!!!
