Best Wishes… and Sad News

Diana's dogs napping on a pillow. My best wishes for a good New Year to everybody.

I’m sorry that I have to begin the year myself with bad news; my lovely dog JJ died this afternoon (complications from a freak accident he suffered two weeks ago) and we buried him next to my garden, where he loved to hunt rabbits and toads with his brother, Homer.

Homer is bereft and so are we.

  1. My condolences on the loss of your furkid. I have lost two in the past two years. Spirit, my blue merle collie girl and heart dog in September 2017 (she had doggie dementia) at the age of 13 1/2. Then Ferguson, our yellow collie, last November at age 12. They were both rescue collies. We have our blue boy, Merlin (age 7), and our two Samoyed, Cirrus (age 13) and Nimbus (age 2 and Cirrus’s nephew). My husband is also a writer. Fictional thrillers during World War I. He is self publishing them. He has started the third now. I am the illustrator.

    Take care.

  2. So sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is very hard. Prayers

  3. I was so sorry to hear of your loss of JJ,

They leave a big hole in the heart.

Gone to play with the big boys in the sky

  4. So sorry to hear about your sweet dog.

  5. I am so sorry to hear about your furbaby’s death. I love my puppies and I grieve so hard every time I lose one. We still have our great memories though, don’t we?❤️

  6. My deepest sympathies for the loss of your fur baby. I had a red doxie, Max. It’s been 14 years since I lost him and I still miss him more than any pup I’ve had. God bless you and yours, and I really hope Homer feels better soon.

  7. I am so sorry for your loss, nothing hurts like losing a fur friend! Prayers!

  8. I am so sorry for your loss. They take a chunk of our heart with them when they go. I currently have four big red dogs and they are my children now that I am retired. It is a long process and I still cry when I look a pictures of those who have gone earlier.

  9. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I love me some doxies. I’m going to meet a breeder on the 18th and I’m looking forward to a new addition to my family. Take care…

  10. I am late with this. My heart goes out to you. This is a pain I know well. Please keep remembering what a great life you gave JJ. Maybe that will help.

  11. I am truly sorry for your loss. Go gently. Our animals are family and sometimes behave better than the human components no

  12. I must add my condolences. I Jane had to soccer the loss of many loving dogs through my life. I have found comfort in knowing they have crossed the rainbow to wonderful and free fields to romp and play.

  13. I am heartsick to learn of Diana’s loss of JJ. I know, as I lost a sweet kitty to a tragic accident also, last Saturday, 2/2/2019. He was crushed by the garage door. Bereft is a fitting word. I am a well-read, well-educated, working professional, and I DID NOT KNOW that the garage door will NOT necessary “pop up” when the kitty runs inside. I always look for them, but he tried to slip in at the last minute. I am heartbroken, grief-stricken, traumatized, angry. . .and determined to warn others.

I appreciate Diana sharing her loss. I have devoured her work for the last couple of years. Especially helpful to me in this tragedy were the passages from Chapter 39 of Outlander, “To Ransom a Man’s Soul”, when Claire speaks with Father Anselm. It was only coincidental that I was reading this the very week after I lost my buddy (this week). And it was only coincidental that I went to Diana’s site to make sure I was following the books in order (not that I haven’t seen the Starz presentation several times over). Father Anselm tells Claire that the conditions of grace are that you give your full consent to it. How insightful of Diana to have written this nearly 30 years ago.

It helped me a lot this week since I knew this freak accident happening to my best sweet friend was not my fault, but I felt responsible. I felt lost. It’s been a very rough week. I wish I could reverse the loss of both JJ and my sweet little Chin. But I can’t; however, we are not alone, and that has been the hardest part for me during the dark night, even though I am surrounded by friends. Thank you for everything you do, Diana. Thank you for helping us carry your sadness as we have others carry ours too, as we must go forward. I am blessed in every way that a good friend wrote on a piece of paper several years ago to suggest the very best in good reading, “Outlander, Diana Gabaldon”.

  14. I’m so very sorry for you and your family. I’ve felt that pain on many occasions and it never is easy. God bless JJ and Homer – your family too.

  15. I know the pain. When I lost my Yorkie who slept with me on my pillow every night for 18 years, met me every day when I came home from work and we played our favorite game Bugger in my Nose. She was my heart. They are in a good place. Be strong.

  16. I’m so sorry for you and homer. His energy and beauty lives on in you both.

  17. I am truly sorry. It is so hard to lose a member of the family and that is exactly what they are.

  18. I know what it is like to lose a previous member of the family. May you and Homer give each other comfort as you remember your beloved JJ.

  19. I’m so sorry for your loss.

I have lost MANY beloved pets, over the years – and feel their loss much more than the loss of some humans I’ve known.

  20. I just read “souls of dogs”, and it gave me a small yet powerful reassurance of what i already believe. My pets have always been a source of love and devotion. I lost my little chihuaha a few weeks ago, and am still mourning her loss. But Jaime’s words and Roger’s words with regards to dogs having a soul were spot on. Thank you for having the tiniest of details that make the Outlander world real to us. I feel their lives intertwined with my own, share thier joy and mourn thier losses as well. I am sorry for the loss of your beloved JJ.
