BOOK EIGHT HAS A TITLE!

Which is….

WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART’S BLOOD

(I still want an octopus on the cover, but we’ll deal with that later.)

*****************************************************

Now home from DragonCon!! Had a good time, but good to be back. Further info on title, pursuant to questions:

Y’all are assuming I _know_ everything about that title, which is not the case. {g} I do know a _few_ things, though:

First off, it has to do with the printing trade, the written word, and its effect on the American Revolution (and the effect of the Revolution on the printers and writers, for that matter). That’s why it specifically needs the “written with…”–

Though that part has also to do with Roger, but I’m not going to tell you why.

And as I said (I think) earlier, it has to do with the Gaelic term “A chuisle,” meaning, “my heart’s blood”–to refer to a beloved child. (You recall that Jamie uses it of his adopted grandchildren as well as those who really _are_ of his physical blood.) Ergo, possibly—you think?–to do with family relationships, of which there are One Heck of a Lot in this book.

I can’t think why some folk assume there’s anything ominous about the title. It just means that something’s done–e.g., written–with passion, not that someone’s stabbing themselves in the chest with a quill and going GAK! on their desk. Have we never heard of imagery or metaphor, for heaven’s sake?

And no, it certainly doesn’t give any intimation that this is the last book. What about it sounds like “THIS IS THE END?” IF it should turn out to be the last book, I’d tell you straight out. At the moment, I’m thinking the odds are against it being the final one, but I won’t know that for a few months yet.

As for the person who thought someone was going to die in this book….well, I can give you pretty good odds on that one. I’ve never written a book that didn’t have anybody dying in it. (And fwiw, Jamie’s _been_ dead for at last part of every single book in the series. It isn’t necessarily fatal, you know. {g})

And as for not sounding like the other books in the series–it has the same number of words, the same number of syllables, and the same rhythm as A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES. Most of the books are paired, in terms of title structure: OUTLANDER/VOYAGER, DRAGONFLY IN AMBER/DRUMS OF AUTUMN, A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES/WRITTEN WITH MY HEART’S OWN BLOOD (I’m leaning toward “Heart’s Own,” if only because “HOB” is easier to pronounce). Only THE FIERY CROSS and AN ECHO IN THE BONE are unlike the others. (I didn’t do this on purpose, btw, with the exception of DRUMS OF AUTUMN–that one _was_ chosen specifically to echo DRAGONFLY (and is subsequently the weakest title of the bunch).)

  1. How exciting! I love it. I had been thinking just last night when book eight would get a title. The #DailyLines are always a treat and now book eight will be able to have a name like the others. And it means publication is one step closer!!! Yeah!

    • Diana – agree it should be heart’s own rather than vice versa. I’m still wondering…How is the seer’s prophecy fulfilled in contemporary Scotland- someone from the line of Fraser will be a significant change agent. So many ends to tie up. Can’t wait!

    • I am new to this site but not new to the books. Really glad to hear that a new one is cooking – and that it may not be the last. 2013 is a long wait but I guess that leaves me ample time to do what I always do before the new one arrives – re-read all the others. It’s taking me longer and longer…
That’s a thought – is there a record for the quickest read of every book in the series, in order???
      PS Love the new title

      • Claire,

When I first read (I’m saying first, because I have read all of the books multiple times so far) The Outlander, which is named De Reiziger in Dutch it took me 3 days.
By the time I was half through,I ordered the second one,so I’d have it in time to keep on reading once I’d finish the first one, which took me 5-6 days to read,by that time I had discovered I there was a third book even!! I went to the bookstore and ordered it right away..
after the third book I had to wait for 4-5-6 & 7 to be published here.
Every time though, before a new book comes out,I re-read all of them..
        I don’t know if that’s a record,but heck,I’m doing my very best =)

I have been an avid reader of these books for many years. I not only have each in hard back but on cd and now on my Kindle. I remember starting the series years ago and waiting inpatiently for the next in the series to be out. I read and re-read them over and over again. I got my friend hooked on them too and she was just asking me if I had heard anything about the next one and when it was to be released. I am hoping it will be soon. I already have the new John Grey on pre-order too. I hope you keep writing and we will keep enjoying!!

        • I am the same way. In anticipation of each new book, I have re-read the entire series. Can’t get enough of these books.

      • I am with you on the re-reading of all the books before the next one comes out. They just keep getting better and better. So many more details are brilliantly clear to me with each reading. I find that I get very little sleep when I start as I just can’t put them down!

Thanks so much Diana for the writing of them!! The new title is wonderful.

      • Glad to know I’m not the only nut case who rereads everything between new books. Can’t wait ! Aloha

      • I read them this summer. May to August.

      • I read all of them the week of Thanksgiving last year! I know that has to be the record. I couldn’t put them down.

I started Outlander again last week and plan to re-read them slower this time. Great series!

      • I can read all the books in 2 weeks :) don’t know if thats a record or not… my hubby is scared of the speed at which I read but I love reading and have since I was a child

        • Oh, my goodness I thought I did well in 1 1/2 months working full time. I would think that is a record.

        • My local Librarian turned me on to this series when I was complaining of not having anything worthy to read. We live in a small town on Lake Champlain in Vermont, by backyard is Mount Independence and I can look across the lake at Fort Ticonderoga. It is now the end of September, I began the series on the 1st of the month …. I have finished book six this evening. I cannot even begin to explain how wonderful these books are to me and how I cannot wait to get home from work, feed the family, do the chores, get everyone to bed so I can read and read and read and be lost in the world of Jamie and Claire! I am borrowing book 7 tomorrow and cannot believe that another book is due out soon …… I completely and utterly lost to the 21st century when I read these books ….. I think I might be so sad when I finish book 8?! Thank you …. for making me read like I did as young 4th grade girl who wanted a fantasy to believe in :)

      • I truly hope that this anticipated book will reveal why Jamie was in 1945 Scotland outside of Claires window!

    • Being one of your greatest fans here in The Nehterlands..When will it be available here??
      Eva

      • Dear Eva–

Probably six months to a year after it’s published in English; it takes time to do the translation of such a long book. Hope you enjoy it, though!

        –Diana

    • Wonderful! I love all of your books and I will patiently await the next one.

I am currently in my second year of law school so a 2013 release date is actually perfect =)

    • I love the Title for Book eight. As a Scot, Written with my own Hearts Blood, talks to me about love, family and fate. In view of the contents of your stories I think this a wonderful Title and perfect!
As an avid fan, the wait till 2012/2013 is fretful but always worth it. As a non American, the History of America is interesting, but sometimes too detailed. However I am looking forward to gaining insights in to the history of USA with the continuing story.
Keep up the good work! Out here in “Readers Land” we hang breathless on your every word!

    • It thrills my heart to know that book eight is just around the corner. I have just finished listening to all of the seven novels narrated by Davina Porter and I am so excited that the next book will be out soon (I hope) The title sounds perfect. When the original books came out I was in awe of finding a writer who captured my imagination so thoroughly and even more impressed now that I have revisited them in Audio.

      • Maybe I’ll try the audio too. I’m a slow reader, it takes me a couple of months to finish one of these books, nevermind re-reading all 7! Plus keeping up with my other reading. Thanks for the idea.

        • Davina Porter is brilliant. Couldn’t be a better match for the outlander series. She flawlessly goes from character to character and you know exactly who is speaking. I just finished the Scottish prisoner (purposely reading slowly knowing the 8 th book would be a while in coming). I was thrilled to read the excerpts and now must re-read book 7 as I had forgotten the contents! Hearing the series read by davina is a special treat and I enjoy listening while I am working around the house.
Anxiously awaiting the end of 2012 so I can start on book 8!

  2. Oh, that’s going to make us all think.
and why can’t you have an ocotopus?? It’s your book! LOL

  3. But does it have a release date?? Even ballpark?

    • yes… release date?

    • Dear Angela (et al)–

No, there’s no release date–I won’t finish _writing_ the thing before the end of next year! Having a title is progress, don’t get me wrong {g}–but it’s a good long way from the book being done.

      –Diana

      • Sooo… are you sayin’ 2013, then? before it goes to publishing? Time to re-read, re-listen and wait…..,

Thanks for the great great story

      • Although it will be a painfully long wait to find out what my favourite characters have been doing, I’m glad to know an approximate release date. Now I can get all my chores caught up, so I don’t have to listen to my husband complaining that,” I’ve had my nose in a book all day!” LOL!

        • Well, let’s see, BOSAA in 2005, and EITB in 2009, and she’s given us some Juicy excerpts-anyone see the pattern? My best guess is 2013, probably After August sometime–say October? Just making an educated guess, but that’s what IIIII’m thinking (extras I’s on purpose, btw).

        • I agree, although I just finished reading book 7(read all 7 this summer). I am having withdrawals. At work I think about all the characters and wonder about poor Jem and Mandy! Happy to hear there will be a book 8! I too will get all my chores caught up! lolx2

          • It’s so funny to hear that someone read book 7 during the summer. A woman from work told me about a book called Outlander and said I might like it. Well, I went out and bought it, then found out it was a series.
I finished the series in 1 1/2 months. I fell in love with Jamie, Claire, wee Ian’s loss of innocence, his finding it through Rachel, and all of the other characters. Oh, I don’t want to start on Brianna and William. I have never been so engrossed by a book before, let alone a series, but the series is phenomenal. But now I feel lost because there is an 8th book and I just can’t pick it up right now. Waiting is going to be difficult.
I must say though, I sure wish I were Scottish and had a verra highland scottish accent. :)

        • Just finished reading book 7 (took me all summer to read 7)! I loved the series, and I am going through withdrawals now that I don’t have a book to read, totally worried about Jem and Roger! Thank God there will be a book 8! I too will get all my chores caught up!! LOLx2

      • OMG… LOVE IT.. :)

On another note i think that if you ever do a movie .. you cannot cast any of these pretty boy actors as jamie.. The Best person for the job IS Andrew Galloway AKA Drew McIntyre from the wwe have a look he is everything you describe about jamie With the only eception he doesnt have red hair, he is scottish , Tall absolutly stunning.. lol….

Thats all i have to say xo Love your books i started reading them last year and have re read them now four times i can not find another book that appeals to me i love to read all the time and i need a book to have me hooked by atleast the first 50 pages or i cant read them … i was hooked from page 1 with outlander…
I can not wait for book 8.

        • @Alita… No ! I want to keep my very own image of Jamie, Claire, Lord John and all other characters…they’re just perfect as I imagine them !

Thank you Diana for those wonderful books ! I’ve read them in English and French (out of curiosity translation wise…except for the Lord John series which I’ve read in English only) and they’re both just as good. Looking forward to reading your next book !

        • You are right. He would make a great Jamie! On a side not, i had my daughtr Sept. 7th and named her Claire after, who else, Claire from Outlander series. So in love with these books! Happily and almost patiently waiting on book 8.

      • I met a new person today and she said something about Jamie and Claire. We hugged. We talked about the books. Diana needs to go nowhere until the next book is finished. I so love her series and it is horrible to hang like this. Hurry. Hurry. forsake all others!!
        .

      • Diana you take your time I’ll keep rereading your books, buying them in paperback hardback and audio and enjoying every minute of them. My recent Outlander obsession is who will play Jaime. I used to think Gerard Butler would be perrrfect. But my recent Jaime fantasy has Chris Hemsworth’s face on it. Cat eyes and all. What’s your thought?

      • Feel the same way as everyone else- read all of the books with a passion – casually mentioned them 10 years ago to colleagues at work and have now converted half of Liverpool UK to the series. CANNOT WAIT for the next one – and good idea to re-read on kindle – thats just what I might do to get me through the next twelve months.

  4. Aaah!!! I can barely stand the anticipation!

    • I just started this series, and am almost done with the 7th book. Can’t believe I have to wait to see what happens to this family. Oh well it will be worth it!

      • I started reading this 20 years ago when a coworker let me borrow her book. I finished it in 3 days and have been reading and re-reading this series since. Now I have it stored on my Kindle as well as having the books :) . I just finished the series for the umpteenth time and now I am waiting (not so patiently). But in order to pass the time, try to read the series again. You would be surprised at how much you either passed or forgot along the journey!

  5. I love your books. I started reading them by accident really. About 13 years ago I sent my Husband to the store and he came home with Dragonfly in Amber. I put it away for a long time before I read it, not thinking that I would like it. I mean my husband picked it and I didn’t truely think he new what I liked to read. How wrong I was. Several months past and I found it stashed one day when I was bord. Once I stared I couldn’e put it down. I really read all of the books up to and including Drums of Autumn before I even read Outlander. I glad a finally did read it it gave more background. I’m reading A Breath Of Snow And Ashes now. One of my guest at my job came in with your newest one. All day I was thinking…”When is the earliest day I can get to the book store to get that?” Thank you so much for this wonderful story. Keep up the great work.

    • You know that is funny, I had bought Outlander and let it sit for like.. months! I didn’t know if id like it and I don’t remember what made me pick it up in the first place. Any who, when I finally sat down to give it a chance I was hooked and never stopped reading since. I can’t wait for the next I’m just sad that we all have to wait till the end of next year.. But oh well it will be worth it.

  6. Oooh, that sounds just devastating!

  7. I feel a crying jag coming on with that title! Which only makes sense, since every single book from this series causes at least one good crying jag…

  8. Love it! Heart wrenching.

  9. Brings to mind all sorts of heart-rending situations. I also predict a crying jag.

    • Excuse my ‘down under’ ignorance but what is a ‘crying jag’?
P.S. I’m currently re-reading the entire series. If I go slowly enough I could possibly string it out until the release of Book 8.

      • Webster’s defines a jag as “a period of overindulgence in an activity.” This series has moved me to tears on a number of occasions… sometimes to the point of overindulgence.

      • No worries Mary. I have never heard of the term either. I love your idea though! I plan to do the same thing next year…not sure my husband will be very thrilled about it though. He threatened to hold a funeral service for me last year when I read all the the books non-stop, back-to-back, since he felt like a grieving widower. Great news is, I discovered he really does know how to cook and fold laundry!

        • A crying jag is the sort of spasmodic crying that doesn’t let go-it sort of subsides and then builds up steam again and can leave you cleansed and elated or downright exhausted.
          Pam

        • My husband wasn’t pleased, either, when I got hooked on the series. I did the same thing–read the seven books in about six weeks. I KNEW I would have to read them again, so I bought a Kindle. He has no idea what I’m reading! The Kindle is password protected.

          • What you do is get your husband hooked on the books too. Thats what I did, told my husband to just start Outlander and see if he liked it. Of course he did, he couldn’t put it down! He has now re-read all the books in the series as many times as I have, as we re-read them every time a new one is about to be released so the story is fresh in our minds. We have a friendly argument every time a new book comes out as to who will get to read it first. I love being able to discuss the things that happen in the books with him, it great.

  10. We are getting closer and this is good.

  11. Oh wow. That’s very evocative – I like it!

  12. Aye, that one is verra promising.

    Malcolm

  13. I love octopi! i hope you get your wish!

  14. So excited! I can’t wait to read more about Jamie and Claire…no other books quite measure up to these!

    • Have you tried Through a Glass Darkly (Karleen Koen) or Song of Songs (Beverley Hughesdon)? Former part of an incomplete series, latter a one-off. Both are in my all time top 10, along with ‘the Jamie books’, as my sister and I refer to them!

  15. Just a hint of a month, a year! We are dying here!

  16. Oh, I do like that. A portent of things to come. Time to do the annual re-read soon.

    • I am on my annual re-read actually cos makes me feel closer to the new book coming out…. I thought I might be the only re reader!!!

    • I’m rereading the series right now. I’m one third into Fiery Cross. I’m like a lot of others here-I reread when a new book is about to come out and that’s Scottish Prisoner. Two more to go, I timed it good!

      • I re read all the time. When I feel stressed or down I re read Outlander and I get back to my happy place again, I cannot wait ( seriously!!!!) for Written with my Own Hearts Blood!!

    • I’m re-reading them too!! I first read them in spanish and now i’m re-reading them in english… THANKS GOD the Kindle has a dictionary!!! LOL… Saludos

      • Every year I re-read the series. Echo came out when I had surgery. It was all I could do to stay awake and read. I await book eight with baited breath.

        • I also re-read the series from the beginning before the next installment. I also alternate listening to the audiobooks (unabridged only of course!) and they are excellent. I really appreciate hearing the gaelic pronounciations. I have been forcing myself to wait to listen to them all again because I own them all except The Fiery Cross from Audible in an easy to listen format instead of 47 CD’s. FC should be available in November according to the latest update from Diana and I want to be able to listen straight through!

          • I also have been re-reading them every year, and this time, for the first time, it’s been on audio-books. I’m loving hearing the pronunciation of words I’ve been pronouncing wrong “in my head”. I’m almost ready to start Drums of Autumn, so I went to Audible to see about purchasing The Fiery Cross, and was very disappointed to see it’s not there! When I googled it, I found that it looks as if it’s only available on cd, and very expensive! Is there any plan for this to come out in digital format?

          • Dear Kelly–

Yes, Fiery Cross will be available from Audible.com in November. I’ve explained why several dozen times and if you poke back through the blog posts, you’ll probably see one of them. (g)

            –Diana

  17. Hooray!!! Gettin closer. Sounds like something either Jamie or Claire said???

  18. Cannot wait. I read books 1-7 starting in January, ending at the beginning of Aug. So excited for the next one!

  19. An impassioned title indeed, just like your work.
Why an octopus though?, is it because is Book ‘Eight ‘or is it in relation with the books contents or all of the above?

  20. Thanks for the bits you shared with us at the Eagle Eye Book Shop Sunday afternoon! Although, I don’t think you shared the title with us. Regardless of the name, I know it will be great.

Thanks for being generous with your time at events like those in Atlanta this weekend.

  21. You know what? I love the title. But for some reason it instantly makes me think that Jamie is going to die in this novel. I don’t know how I have jumped to that conclusion but it’s where the title seems to land me.

Please don’t kill him off! Or let him kill himself off!

  22. Oh man. Sounds awesome! I can’t wait.

    P.S.
I’m all for the octopus cover.

    • Octopi makes me think poor Jamie will be subjected to traveling by water…we all know the effect that has…can hardly make myself sit still for the next one…thanks Diana for bringing us this timeless wonderful story.

      • Octopus related — could be that the lady Diana has come in touch with her inner Steam Punker as they, too, enjoy exploring the concept of time travel, so I’ve been told, and are more than passing fond of octopi and owls. I’m happy, though not necessarily patient in waiting, to wait because the continuing tale only continues to improve.

        • Dear Binneas–

Well, I’ve enjoyed what steam-punk I’ve read (mostly Gail Carriger and Cherie Priest, so far), but writers have been playing with time-travel since the late 19th century, if not earlier. As for the octopodes, I was actually a marine biologist in a previous professional incarnation. (See blogpost titled “Dingbats and Whale Penises.)

          –Diana

          • Im so grateful you decided to leave your marine biology behind. You began these books not knowing what a world for the readers was about to be opened up! I picked up a used copy of Outlander expecting it was something along the lines of a Harlequin book. Much to my surprise it was full of everything I enjoy, romance accurate history and fantasy. Thank you so much for not stopping with the first. When I finished the book(7 yrs after picking it up) I was desperate for it not to be over. I re-read it immediatley. After the 2nd read i thought “what if theres another?” AND I WAS HAPPY TO FIND 5 MORE! I am waiting to to re-read the whole series again attempting to coincide it with your next books release. Please never say the series is over. Even if it takes you ten yrs to write another w/many projects inbetween, keep the hope for us alive. I have purchased several copies to get women I know “started”, I know they will not finish, just like me. God Bless-
            Thank you for your time,
            Kathyrn Shirey

  23. We love the series and would love for it to continue but PLEASE don’t leave it hanging like the last installment.

  24. Oooohhh. That gives me pause. And the hairs are standing up on my neck too. Diana, what a twisted web you weave. As echoed in other statements, please stay home so we can all just buy it and read it. Love from Tucson.

  25. I think my heart skipped a beat. omg. I’m only on book three going to book 4 now. I’m happy for more books coming. hahah! <3 Diana you are amazing! :3

  26. I don’t like it- to me it portends the end of the series and after 20 years of living with these books, I don’t want to think of being without a new one to look forward to. My mind keeps flashing back to “Outlander” and the scene with “Jamie’s ghost” standing outside of the boarding house and later the comment that Jamie makes about seeing an elderly Claire, with a device (identified as a telephone) in her hand, so we know that Jamie departs first, and that Claire must go back through the stones…. But knowing it isn’t going to make it any easier to deal with….

    • There’s no indication whatsoever that Jamie has any predispositions to see the future. Whenever he
connects ( in his dreams) with Clair or Brianna while they’re separated by the 200 years chasm,
he sees them in the parallel reality so that’s not the future time for Clair. And again, when he sees
Brianna, Roger and the kids safe ( or less than that later on) in Lallybrook, it’s the same idea.
In my opinion, Jamie’s seeing Clair sitting somewhere in a 20 century office could be a reminiscence of his visions of Clair while they were separated for 20 years. I don’t think Clair will
ever time travel again, unless something unthinkable happens. Only Diana can solve this puzzle.
I think that Jamie’s ability to time travel while his consciousness is asleep originates in the almost fatal head injury inflicted on him by his devious uncle Dougal. Maybe Jamie’s wounded brain
made up for the damaged nerve connections by forming new ones or activating some dormant potential making him even more special. Clair and Jamie’s transcendent love could also be a factor.

      • Iwona, you clever fan! I’ve wondered why the injury to Jamie’s head has been included in every book—it has to be important, but I couldn’t imagine why. I think you’ve got it! Now here’s a question—does your theory also explain why he’s completely tone deaf? That tidbit has been repeated several times. Remember Jamie said that he could differentiate musical notes before the accident but afterward he couldn’t hear anything in the music.

    • Please refresh my memory, which book is this in. I remember Jamie telling Claire that he had “seen” her, but I recall him describing her just as she was described in the first book, by Frank. I thought the “telephone incident” was from BSA when he was describing seeing the children.

  27. I think that this is my favorite title to date. Previously it was probably A Breath of Snow and Ashes. I like to wander the library and a book really needs to have an interesting title to get my attention, since I usually have no idea what I am looking for. That title would _definitely_ get my attention. It’s got my attention now. :)

    • Now that you’ve revised your entry for the title, I like “Heart’s Own” better than “Own Heart’s” (not that it really matters what I think). It flows off the tongue better, so it feels more poetic and evocative (not to mention that the acronym for the title looks and sounds better). When you announced the title, whether it’s “in” or “with” or HO or OH Blood, it really spoke to me of passion and loyalty and the depth of devotion among all the members of this family and its extensions. I love it!

      • I also recall (I think) that you had originally pondered “an Echo in the Blood” for book 7′s title, but Doug had been turned off by it on account of it sounding sort of “slasher-esque”. I’m glad you were able to work “blood” into the title and I think it works very well for book 8. And now I will stop fawning over the name of the new book. :)

      • I like the new title, but wondered about the Gaelic term “A chuisle,” meaning, “my heart’s blood”– I’m Irish & the usual translation is “heartbeat” or “pulse”. Perhaps it is different in Scotland.

  28. Love the title. One step closer to publication! Any thoughts on when that might be?

  29. I LOVE it! It sounds absolutely heart wrenching though, which terrifies me. It sounds like an ending, and I can’t even let myself think that without tearing up! Whatever happens, I just hope Jamie is still alive and well at the end of this book! I’m already half way into my 2nd re-read of this year & very much looking forward to the next one! Thanks Diana for all you do & most of all for Jamie & Claire!

    • ooh no, or maybe with the new spoiler I just saw you posted, maybe the title is to do with the Fraser men, Brian, Jamie, William, & Jem… wouldn’t it be just amazing to have some story line showing their connections more. Especially what if we could see Brian, young Jamie, & possibly Jem together? Too many possibilities! I’m bursting here!

  30. What?! Eight different story lines or something else? This title is making me nervous, who’s blood and who’s heart???

You’ve done it again Diana! :)

  31. Aww jeez….. I’m sorry but I just don’t understand why this title is so very personal sounding compared to the rest of the books in this series. To me it just doesn’t fit with the rest of them…… Couldn’t we not find something a little less ominous sounding ?
I like the octopus idea though :)
Could mean eight different ways to say I love you by eight different people etc
But I still don’t like this title, sorry, it just sounds too much like something Dracula would say :(

    • I hate to say it but I don’t like it either. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the series and I’m one of it’s biggest fans, but I think this title is too long and doesn’t ‘fit’ well with the rest of the titles.

I’ll still read it though ;)

      • I don’t like it because it’s written in the first person, so it doesn’t “match” the others. It’s like a jarring note. But of course it’s DG’s baby and she knows what she’s doing! ;) I do like the imagery.

        • Dear Christine–

          Rof,l! Er…tell me…what point of view is “VOYAGER” in? And how does “A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES” match “OUTLANDER”? {g}

Didn’t know there was a requirement that titles match…

          –Diana

          • Quite frankly Mrs. Gabaldon could call it “cooking with crap” and as long as it has to do with the Fraser family, I’ll buy it and read it! Ma’am you name it whatever you feel Jamie and Claire need it to be, who am I to second guess a genius!

  32. OMG – thinking maybe something not too good will be in the story – yes – makes me nervous too … wondering who it applies to …

  33. OMG WOW, YEA, I CAN’T WAIT WHOOHOO!!!!!

I know that was alot of caps there, but I am so excited. I have been looking very forward to this next novel!

    ~elaine ossipov

  34. I do like the title, don’t get me wrong; but I can’t help but think that non-reading bookstore owners will be even MORE inclined to put the book amongst the bodice-rippers and romances with a title like that (although the octopus will be sure to confuse prospective readers!)

  35. I just finished reading the fourth book(not in order), and was captivated after reading the first. Just ordered two more and hope I’ll have finished them by the time the new one is released. Love your writing!

  36. Hi Diana,

fascinating title, love it . But I prefer “Written with my heart’s own blood” to “Written with my own heart’s blood”.
    Can’t tell you why, it’s the sound of it… I think… No, can’t explain.

But really, I like it. It’s got the right feeling.

    • I like the mistaken title, too, but with the preposition ‘in’. It is something about the feel of it, even though the corrected title arguably makes a little more sense.

      Diana,
Do you know yet if this is the last one?

      Thanks!

      • Dear Anieva–

        Actually, my husband likes “in” better, too–so I’ll consider that. {g}

No, I don’t know yet whether this is the last one or not, but I should know within the next few months.

        –Diana

        • Dear Diana,

He does? You will? This is so exciting – all of it! Thank you for your response. I’ve only read Outlander, but I have all the others and I’m looking forward to reading them. You’re editor was right; these books are not like any other. I’m so glad you broke new ground.

          Best,
          anieva

  37. Great title, I think it seems to fit in very well with all the others! I bought Echo yesterday at a discount store, but can’t read it yet because I am still reading Drums of Autumn! I am going to peek at the clifffhanger I keep reading about though…!!

  38. Oh. My. That’s good and forboding and everything we expect of your titles. ; )

  39. Your titles are very thought provoking…and from reading all the tidbits over the last few months this title really has my mind thinking all kinds of things.

The worst is how long we must still wait for book 8! Sigh…………………….

  40. Am beyond thrilled that it has a title, and such a strong one. Can’t wait to get more of Claire and Jamie. Even as I read other great fiction, I miss them! They can’t be replaced.

  41. Diana,
Love the new title and can’t wait to hold it in my hands! Excitement abounds!!

  42. The title takes my breath away, because I know the ending will be amazing. How could the end not be amazing with Jamie and Claire?!?!?! I am sure this time Claire will not go back through the stones until she knows for sure Jamie is dead, if that is a possibility in book eight. And I keep going back to the ghost of Jamie in Outlander, watching Claire comb her hair through the window of the bed and breakfast. I am sure Jamie is devastated she is there for an intimate get away with Frank. I am so excited and sad to know how that will be woven into book eight. We are all excited about “Written With My Own Heart’s Blood”!!!!!!

    • I think about the ghost scene with Jamie at the begining of Outlander alot too, and while I’m excited to find out about it, I am by no means anxious (I dont want it to ever, ever, ever end!) But the good news is, that while the new title is ominous, Diana has never said or implied that book 8 was the end. Unless you know something I don’t know????

    • I’m still trying to figure out what time period in Jamie’s life he was “watching Claire comb her hair through the window of the bed and breakfast.”

The time travel really confuses me — could he have been “watching” AFTER Clare had come to him and she left pregnant?

      Anyone have any suggestions?

      • Maggie,

They are referring to the Prologue or the first chapter of Outlander in which a ghostly figure (who we all know by now is Jamie’s ghost) standing outside the B&B where Claire and Frank are staying during their second honeymoon in Scotland. This occurs before Claire knows anything about Jamie, time travel, etc. But obviously Jamie knows her since all their interactions occur in the 1700′s. Claire doesn’t see him at this point, but Frank practically ran into him on the sidewalk as he was coming back to the inn. Frank tells Claire about seeing someone standing outside looking at the inn, and that the person pretty much vanishes as he’s walking away.

        • Hmmm….well I like to think of it like this: Jamie’s ghost was maybe searching for Claire, his true soul mate. When Claire goes through the stones, she comes out in the time of Jamie. She (unknowingly) had a driving force, or stiring wheel …if you will to land in that particular time. It is Jamie who stirs her there! He always says how he’s loved her from the first time he laid eyes on her. Remember in Voyager how Geilie the evil witch told Claire about the gems for protection from the horrible things they hear and feel while going through the stones? Well Claire tells her that she didn’t have any gems, she just thought of love/person/feeling or the like that got her through the stones…so, maybe it was Jamie’s ghost that pulled her to 1743 the first time through? No? mmm… how romantic!

      • I, too, keep going back to this part of the beginning and am intrigued as to if/how Diana will resolve this for us. If time travel is possible, could this then mean that there is no death, just a passing from one life to another. Could this episode have happened to Jamie when he was passing between ‘lives’?

      • I remember reading, in one of the books (can’t remember which one), Jamie tells Claire that he had a dream about her. In this dream he saw her through a window combing her hair. He new the dream was of her in her own time, because the lighting was different. He knew it wasn’t candlelight, therefore must have been the “electricity” that she has described to him. I don’t know how that will come together in the storyline to come, but it might have something to do with the ghost that Frank saw. I can’t wait to read the next book!!!

      • I always interpret Jamie’s ghost as his own time travel through a dream. I too keep waiting for this event to pop up in a new book. Although, not knowing if or when it will happen keeps the romantic heart beating.

        • Jamie’s appearance to Frank has always been a talking point amongst me and my friends. We think Roger is getting closer to figuring out why time travel is possible for some and not others. Perhaps Claire will be able to take Jamie with her through the stones or perhaps he goes after her for some reason. Do we know how old Jamie appears to be when Frank sees him? Any hints Diana?

I love the new title and I’m far from patient. Just have to keep re-reading and enjoying I suppose!!

  43. Not sure what to think about the title. The octopus….eight arms, eight books in the series? It’s sure to be an awesome read. Just PLEASE don’t kill Jamie and Claire off yet. We need to know more about everyone else…Bree,Roger,William,Young Ian,Jem and on and on. And what’s this with Buck in the 20th century and Lord John married to Claire? And Jenny’s left Lallybroch? Too many loose ends for just one book!!!Keep writing Diana and we’ll ALL keep reading!!!! Don’t think I will ever tire of these characters!!!!!!!

  44. Heart blooded…ventricular (bright red-more oxygen) or atrial (dark red-low oxygen)? Before people figured out the heart was a pump, it was associated with emotion (valentines) or the soul (Egyptian ka). Hmm…in financial symbolism red ink indicates debt or loss and black is for profit or balance. Octopi are really cool. There’s a video of a giant pacific octopus interacting with its keeper at the Monterey Bay Aquarium that shows how smart they can be. The die-after-reproducing strategy sucks though.

  45. I love it!! Its deep, emotive and sensitive… Now we just can wait…
    Best wishes, Diana!!
I hope to see you at the Brooklin Book Fest!!

  46. See if they can somehow semi-hide the octopus in the cover art? Author, Title, accolades, main picture thingee (something socially acceptable – chalice, ring, what-have-you artifact that pulls it all together?) somehow superimposed on a sort of semi translucent (why did I almost type crocodile?) octopus, with it’s sneaky little tentacles just starting to wrap around it (central cover illustration, that is). . . wrapped around a Sword of Caduceus, bleeding out into the Bowl of Hygeia. . .

Okay. Sorry. Will not quit day job…

Hmm. Eighth book? Eight plot lines? Eight games to Lord Stanley’s Cup? Have you become a Hockey fan lately?

    Elaine

    • Dear Elaine–

Love the idea of a shadow octopus! {g} I’ll suggest it to the (no doubt flabbergasted) art department.

      –Diana

      • I like the idea of a shadow octopus. Sometimes less is more you know?

And about the title– you are the heart and soul of this mammoth, wonderful tale. Whatever title you come up with will be the right one.

  47. It sounds perfect. I never read spoilers anymore but I always look forward to finding out the upcoming book’s title. This sounds like there will be tragedy, but isn’t there always? I won’t even begin to speculate, you always take us on such an amazing journey with these characters that I’ll wait to see where this one will lead. Thank you so much for giving us this incredible story.

  48. OH yeahhhhhhhh that’s a good one!!!!!

  49. Diana, I hope you get your octopus! I can see how this book is going to have eight different plot lines that all tie back to Jamie. That image that Tenessa shared the link for seems very representative… each arm has many twists and turns which is how I imagine the plot lines will be. Oh, I canna wait!!!!!

  50. Diana,

It doesn’t matter how you title it, it will be fabulous. I am however very excited as it makes it sound extremely romantic and I just can’t wait for the release!! If you want an octopus then you should have it! My only fear is that this is going to be the last book…..I hope not!

  51. Nice title. I like it.

An octopus? Don’t suppose you could tell us…never mind. I know what you’ll say.

    Pam

  52. I love the title but I predict Someone will die. Is it crazy be sad already?

  53. i would like to buy the book as soon as possible. thank you for for being an awesome writer.

  54. Octopus makes ink… book written in ink… written with my heart’s own blood… hmmm

    • Heartink, nothin’ but heartink…Inkheart is the title of a popular fantasy by Cornelia Funke. Cuttlefish ink was used for drawing and writing and Sepia (which is a cuttlefish genus name) is the same as the ink and its color.

  55. Cannot wait! Wa updating the ckbk and thought I’d pop over to see if there was anything new. oh boy! I read the last one with an excerpt of book eight, where Roger goes back. Fantastic!!!!!! I cannot wait! I purchase book one over the summer-the 20th anniversary issue, and I loved the new things! I even loved the cd sampler! I know the series has to end sometime, but I’m hoping that it will later than sooner. I did tear up a bit when I saw the title.

  56. P.s. Jaime’s or Claire’s? Or possibly Brianna’s Or Roger’s?

  57. do you guys really think the title is “written with my own heart’s blood”? don’t you think maybe diana meant that the title is written in her own heart’s blood, i.e. she has made up her mind about it but is not going to reveal anything yet? I mean, it sounds so different from the others and after all she has a gift for humor…

    • Finished Echo in the Bone about 5 minutes before I checked the website for an arrival date for the next installment Monday a.m. at 12:05–Didn’t have that feeling about Jamie or Roger, but I’d say Rob Cameron is a possibility. My daughter who was 11 when I brought home the first two books, read them all in order after they first came out. So when I find a particular section in desperate need of direct, immediate retribution, I go to her and say something like I did toward the end of Echo when Jem was taken–”Tell me Rob Cameron is going to have something awful happen to him and soon…”

I love all of the books, but Echo left a lot of “cliff-hangers.” Didn’t you trust us to come back (like Rollo) with just one or two? I was heartened to read your comment, “IF it turns out to be” the last… As usual, starting with Voyager (the first time we “thought” that was the last one) there are just too many things left hanging in Echo, and I expect when you finish the series, that we will be like a huge, soppy mess of tissues, wrung out with the emotion, but that we will KNOW this one is the last one.

      • Here, here! I agree as I am sure all readers of Diana’s would that all of the Outlander books are fabulous but Echo is by far the best. I must admit that as the book was drawing short of pages my panic set in, when I realized that so much was going to be left up in the air. Four years to the next one almost feels like cruelty! Shamefully, it had occurred to me to re-read the books simply for pleasure but now I think a re-read is neccesay as I may catch some things that I missed while devouring the books the first time. Guess that is how I will use the next year and a half of wait time. Can’t wait to see how you work all of these loose ends out.

  58. OMG I can’t wait I have a feeling that Jamie is dying in that book… Ojala y no!!

    saludos!

  59. I am so looking forward to #8 – I almost had a heart attack with the ending of #7 (n Echo)
I am a newcomer to the series – it was recommended to me years ago – I just started Outlander in 2010 and ( gosh it sounds like I don’t do anything but read) I have finished all 7 in the past ? 18 months. I am a midwife – I guess I have a lot of “waiting” time in which to read.

Here’s Hoping the new one gets “Birthed ” successfully, SOON!

Thanks You, Ms. Gabaldon for great enjoyment and exhausting adventure!

    • I started reading the series the first time in December of 2004. I was finished byApril of 2005 (I believe there were only 6 books then) so I know what you mean about it looking as if we do nothing but read. Since then I’ve read the entire series about 5 times and it seems like I always wait months between each read. Jamie and Claire are like members of my own family now.

I offered my books to my cousin to read. Her home was destroyed in an April 27th tornado, along with 3 of my books. She has heard me talk about them so much that she payed to replace them herself eventhough I begged her not to. Although I hate that she spent her much needed money on my books, I’m very glad to have them back… I think it’s about time for another reread and I suspect that I’ll do another one before “Written With My Heart’s Own Blood” is realeased.

On a side note, I love the title! I see the ownership that Jamie feels toward his family and his work in it. He gives everything of himself when it comes to either one and the title hints at how important he sees them in his life. I can’t wait til the release!

    • How bad am I? My bookclub posted this book back in Nov 2010. I knew nothing of this book or the enfolding series of books. I read all 7 plus 2 Lord John series books by April 2011. How bad is that? I’m not ashamed. I loved every word of those books. Even re-read most of them and also listened to the audio books for Outlander and half of Dragonfly. I search in vain for suitable books that will give me the pleasure of the read as the Outlander series did. I’m afraid Ms. Gabaldon has spoilt me rotten! Nothing can compare to Jamie and Claire and the rest of the characters.

      • Hi Maria! Glad to see another re-reader admit to reading through the series quickly. Outlander was recommended by the mother of a member of my book group, so I checked it out from the library, read it in a few days, then went to the bookstore and $90 later I had them all (through BSA). I took the day off when Echo came out. I read other books for book group, but always go back to the series between “assigned” books. Nothing comes up to it.

If there were a fire in my condo, I’d do my best to get the books, my purse, and my medicines out safely, probably in that order. Like most of us, I really don’t want to read of Jamie’s demise or his being separated from Claire (the ghost scene).

Ah well, I’m about 1/4 through Echo in my latest re-read. I do find something new each time through – the first few times they were what I refer to as “popcorn” reads – just kept stuffing them in, so I didn’t taste every kernel. That’s my excuse for the re-reads. Whatever works!

      • Maria, there’s just no use in trying to find another Diana so I’ve stopped trying. 4 yrs. ago I hadn’t read a romance novel in 30 yrs until someone coerced me into Outlander and then I borrowed all the other books from her and read them in a month. Then I ordered the Lord John books on-line.

Since Outlander, I have been reading romance novels out the wazoo. But Diana is in General Fiction as we know– She was taken off the Romance shelves right after the first book because so above and beyond all the historical romance writers. A student could probably use her books as reference because the accuracy.

  60. I have been reading some of the comments and I must tell you it makes me catch my breath when ever anyone writes that it sounds like Jamie is going to die……oh hell no…please don’t let that happen, not yet at least. I am not ready to give him up….mostly Claire and Jamie because they really are one.
So looking forward to book 8!
Diana thanks for bringing so much enjoyment to so many people.

    • As Diana has said…Jamie is dead at the end of most of the books…but I would put my money where my mouth is and say that its Roger! Diana hasn’t killed off a main character for a while and its over due! So…its just a feeling in my bones.

      • No! Not Roger! I love this poor guy! Everything bad always happens to him. Give him a break….he is sweet, kind, and handsome, please kill off Buck, or Rob Cameron (the weasel that he is). Not our dear Roger. I like him better than Brianna…not that I want her killed off… no way! Diana killed off Ian Murray. He is a main character, to me anyway. There will be more about Jenny too I have a feeling. I want her to know the truth about Claire so badly. She was kind of cold hearted to Claire when she came back after 20 years, and again when Ian was dying. She needs to know the truth!

  61. My mom recommended this series to me and mailed me Outlander for my birthday in June. I started it mid-June and just finished Echo last week. I am seriously going through Claire and Jamie withdrawl. I have thought about reading another unrelated book, but my heart is not in it. I miss the characters already! Don’t know how I’m going to make it until the publication of “Heart’s Own”.

Thank you for your amazing stories!

  62. Thank you, thank you for the update and the semi-explanation of what the title refers to. So looking forward to the “One Heck of a Lot” of family relationships in this book. Especially now that Willie knows the Big Secret.

  63. “I can’t think why some folk assume there’s anything ominous about the title. It just means that something’s done–e.g., written–with passion, not that someone’s stabbing themselves in the chest with a quill and going GAK! on their desk. Have we never heard of imagery or metaphor, for heaven’s sake?”

    I’m giggling to myself. GAK!

Pleased to hear things are moving along & even more pleased to hear that it’s likely not the last book.

  64. Wow…it’s very strong and invocative…can’t wait to put my hands on it!! :) ))

It’s a pity that here, in Portugal, we have to wait long periods of time to have the books translated.
Right now, it was published, in portuguese from Portugal and not in portuguese from Brazil, the second book…after almost 20 years!! I have all the books in english but it’s not the same when we read it in our own language.
I’m reading the #2 in portuguese, and i’m doing it slowly, absorving everything, despite having already read in English.. I know that probably, unfortunately, we’ll only have the #3 released next year.

Congratulations Diana for the #8, and thank you for making our days better.

    Nádia Costa
    Portugal

    • Hi,

I don’t know how it is to read the book in Portugal’s portuguese, but in Brazil’s portuguese I can’t feel a connection with the characters, because unlike the English version, they have no accent, and I feel a lot is lost in translation. They are not bad at all, but it feels a little incomplete. Some of the books weren’t translated here either. I think the last one was ABOSAA, which was released quite some time ago.

I always thought that if a book was published in Portuguese (regardless of the country) it would be published in the same language market pretty soon. It’s strange, I think, because adapting from Brazil’s Portuguese to Portugal’s Portuguese must be a piece of a cake.

      All the best to ya,
      Elisa – Brazil :)

  65. Love the title.

As for the octopus, does this mean you will have eight story lines, one for each leg? You are super woman!

Seriously, you could put a picture of an old boot on your cover and we will all still rush out to get a copy on the release date as soon the book store opens.

  66. Oh, my own heart just did a flip at the better than even odds of a Book 9!!! A bit premature perhaps, but I secretly hope Herself keeps cranking these out every 3 years until she’s 150. And I’ll do whatever it takes to hang around well into my 100′s just to read them – I’ll even exercise if I have to.

    • bwhwahhhh! LOL! Ok, I just sprayed coffee all over my computer screen. Please Diane, dont ever stop writing this series, I will exercise too! tee-hee!

  67. Already looking forward to WWMyHOB (naturally, pronounced “whammy-hob”)!

  68. Dear Diana,

How wonderful the title finally revealed itself to you…also glad that you thought that “heart’s own” sounds somehow better than “own heart”.
I’ve been rolling the “ohb” title off my tongue all day long, and wanted to find the boldness to tell you it sounded better as “hob”…

Well, so much to look forward to now, but at least now we know what to call it
    Happy writing!

  69. Diana,

It has been some time ago that I read that someone had asked you “where the series would end and if it would be a happy ending”. You did not commit to how many books it would take to get there but it would definitely end in Scotland and it would be happy but would bring forth gallons of tears. I am counting on you to fulfill that statement (doesn’t matter how many books later) in the last book!!! I certainly am not ready for Book 8 to be the last one!!!

WRITTEN WITH MY HEART’S OWN BLOOD sounds to me like something Jamie would be writing to or about Claire??? I am sure everyone has a little different idea about what it can possibly be. I will be waiting anxiously for THIS book to come out. Thank you for all the books.

  70. Dear Diana,

I work as a translator for SognandoLeggendo (http://sognandoleggendo.net/) an Italian blog dedicated to fantastic literature.
We would love to interview you by e-mail on occasion of “An Echo In The Bone”‘s publishing in Italy.
If you agree, please send an e-mail to sognandoleggendo@gmail.com
and we will forward the questions to you.

    Sincerely Yours,

    Maurizio

  71. Oooh! I like it. Thanks for the sneak peek.

  72. So, putting it all together, it refers to something written by someone together with his/her biological child or grandchild?

  73. I really like the title. I couldn’t imagine trying to come up with titles for your books and I think they are all excellent and creative. (Just like this new one)

  74. Okay,so I checked here again after working in the yard for a bit. It’s cool here in Cincy., for a change. I was thinking even before I read Diana’s response…that it would have to do with Jaime and claire(duh) and Roger and Brianna, possibly Lord John and William which is six,and then maybe even Jenny and Ian,if she’s wanting an octopus, but then I remember how Roger wernt back and met Brian, Jaime’s father. Yesterday after I saw the title, and I responded I even thought about wee Jem and Mandy.

  75. I’m just thrilled that we are getting close to another book! Diana is the most thoughtful and imaginative writer! I have never since Gone with the Wind become so involved with characters and believe them to be actual people. Thank you so much Diana for never compromising the story-telling and texture of the people in your books, just because we the reader can’t wait! I firmly believe in the end when we do get our greedy little hands on these books, it makes the wait as nothing.

  76. So, just thinking out loud here, but are not Jamie and Clair respectively 58 and 62 years old? I wonder just how much longer she (Diana) can keep them alive and attractive (I mean romance between my mom and dad doesn’t really do it for me?)

    Again, just thinking out loud……

    • I don’t know… a 58 year old Jamie still seems pretty hot to me!!!! He’s had the benefit of Claire’s 20th century knowledge of hygiene, health care, and nutritional requirements. Plus he’s still a very active outdoorsman, so he keeps himself in shape. Of course, I say this as a 50+ year old woman, so I’m not put off by his advancing years.

Don’t put it in the context of your own parents… is there anyone out there who isn’t grossed out when they think of their parents’ romantic life???

      • them being old does get to my head but im in my twenty’s but… i tell ya young Iain has made his way into my heart just as much as jamie, theres a whole new story available for him :-)

        • I completely agree! Young Ian is such a beautiful character. I want to see him happy with Rachel. Finally happy! Emily pi**ed me off for hurting him so badly! I just want to take him in my arms and protect him.

Oh yeah! A spin off series with Young Ian….I could sink my heart into that!

      • In regards to age I have seen Helen Mirren in a bikini and there is nothing non-sexy about her. I have a picture of her in a black merry widow as my desktop background.

  77. omg!!! i cant get over the news Herself has given us! such a tease! i’ve read all the posts and i just cant believe jamie or claire will die too many ppl would b upset. i will NOT let myself think of that its just way to upsetting.

  78. Took me a few minutes but… I think I’m on board with this title :) Sad to hear though that you don’t think you’ll finish writing it until end of 2012 (if I’m understanding you correctly)?! I was kind of hoping we’d have a fall 2012 release date… but maybe that was a foolish expectation considering we’re getting SP in about two months (eek!) and you’ll probably need to travel and promote it. I might be the only Outlander fan out there to think this way, but it’s gotta end *sometime* and DG will know when it’s time. Good luck with everything.

  79. I am one of those folks who really like to know what’s going to happen and so I have allowed myself to read the spoiler from book eight.Following on the heals of “A leaf on the wind of All Hallows Eve” I can hardly wait for book eight to come out!!My imagination is running wild with all the possibilities for the characters.
As far as major characters dying they can live forever as long as the author’s imagination can keep them alive and travelling through time. I suppose they can live until we find out just what that ghost of a Highlander was looking for under Claire’s window in Outlander!

  80. Argh! 2013? Diana, some of your readers aren’t exactly spring chickens. If there are two more books, you might have to send #nine to me in the spirit world. It’s unthinkable to leave this earth without knowing what happens to all those fictional folk you made so dear to us.

Jamie (for real), just wait. The best is yet to come!

  81. Guys— When Claire is combing her hair and Jamie’s ‘ghost’ is looking at her through the window, Claire and Frank are on their second honeymoon in Scotland before she goes through the stones the first time—that’s what I read anyway!! He’s a ghost because he’s been dead for 200 years!

I love the new title. I think it’s very romantic.

If any of you that re-read multiple times have not tried the audiobook version, you are missing out. Davina Porter does an excellent job narrating the first seven. I go to bed with the voices of Jamie, Claire, Bree and the rest in my head. She also does an excellent job with the gaelic.

    • Yes I must agree with Karen.

I too, am a multiple re-reader tragic, and am now spell-bound by the audio books.

The Davina Porter narrated ‘Outlander’ series audio books are absolutely marvelous.

Impatient at how long it would take for a hard copy version of ‘Warriors’ an anthology to arrive with the latest Lord John short story, I purchased and downloaded the audio version of ”Warriors’ – with narration by Patrick Lawler, and was very disappointed to hear Lord John Gray speak with an American accent.

Nothing wrong with an American accent, just that it doesn’t belong to a British Lord. It just killed his ‘character’ as far as I was concerned and distracted from Diana’s excellent story.

I shall look forward to reading the story once my paper version arrives and adding my own voice to Lord John.

I appreciate that it must be difficult for Diana as an author with a short story in an anthology to dictate who narrates her characters, but am hopeful that consideration might be given to future opportunities.

And no…. It doesn’t bother me in the least that the audio book voices I hear for Jamie, John, Rodger, Ian, et al all come from a woman, (Davina Porter).

Davina does an unbelievably good job in delivering the very essence of all Diana’s male characters.

      Warmest regards from
      Antipodean Janet

    • I totally agree – Davina Porter does an excellent job of all the voices (men and women) and all the dialects – listening to the books after reading the hard cover versions adds a new dimension to the story and heightens the enjoyment of Diana’s work. I highly recommend the audio versons for the re-reads.

  82. Squee!!! CANNOT Wait! Especially with the way “Echo” ended–what about Jem?!

  83. Ms. G. – Thank you so much for this blog. It would require many octopi to represent the lot of us addicts. I don’t look at much else in the way of blogs, and very rarely respond, but it’s so nice to know that you’re writing away, though having a bit of time out for a life now and then, but practically taking us with you, and nice to hear how things are going with our favorite Scot and his family, friends and even his less-than-nice fellow citizens. As we all sit and wait for Eight, now aka HOB, it’s consoling to know we’re all in it together.

Thanks for five years and three weeks of enjoyment – looking forward to as many more as your imagination and research can provide.

  84. Love the symetry and metaphor and the way the words flow with An Echo In The Bone title! I also love seeing your thought process through this! I won’t read spoilers but this tidbit is enough to make me want to delve back into a reread of Jamie and Claire’s world! Looking forward to Scottish Prisoner!

  85. Diana, do you realize just how OLD I’ll be before you write the whole series?? And I just can’t die till I read it all! My mother’s maiden name was Bemis, so it was with great interest (yes, she was of the Bemis’ from Bemis Heights) I read about the revolution in your books. Ya just can’t escape your relatives! A confirmed Diana Addict.

  86. when i first heard the book 8 probable title, i thought it was a bit cumbersome to say…(i still do!)…what about ‘written with my heart’s blood’ as you,(DB), states “A chuisle” means…my first thought about the meaning of the title was the letters clair and jamie wrote to bri and roger…and then my second thought went to the printing press and what troubles jamie would be getting himself into…and about that octopus, they also have ink but seem to waste it in the ocean instead of on paper…! DB please hurry with HOB as I along with so many others are anxious as to the plight of our favorite, and not so favorite, characters…

  87. Love the title of book 8!!!  Thank you for giving us these characters to love, to hate, to cry for, to laugh with and to feel heart break with. The history lesson you give us in every book is invaluable. My life is forever changed knowing these characters and I thank you endlessly for that! Looking forward to “WRITTEN WITH MY OWN HEART’S BLOOD”!!! I know it will be well worth the wait ;)

Thank you for all your hard work!

    ~Corrie B.

  88. Diana, this is not about the Outlander Series. Your writing is number 1. This is about a possible other series for you. Please don’t stop reading just yet. Jane Mason was born 1769 near Alexandria, Virginia. The same area where George Mason, signer of of the Declaration of Independence. Jane was doctoring at age 12 and was a doctor by 16. The story goes on from here. Please Google “Jane Mason Jeffery” , you will not be disapointed. The reason I know Jane Mason Jeffery so well is that she is my ggggggrandmother. This is a fascinating pioneering family and we have tons of recorded history. From Virginia to settling the White River Valley with much in between and after.

  89. Diana

Love the title…either way … I just want the story! Thank you for writing a book that I use to measure all other books by! I have become the Outlander pusher…all my friends are now addicted to the series also…LOL I also love the audio books with Davina Porter, I commute 1 hour each way to work, and they help make that time bearable!

Did I read in your blog that you were in Scotland on Loch Ness in July? Okay, gotta do a fan freak-out here…I was there also at the same time….on Loch Ness on the 19th….! It’s probably a good thing I didn’t know you were there in the land of Jamie & Claire…I am sure I would have stalked you! LOL JK

I found myself in Inverness looking for the B&B that Claire & Frank stayed in, on the banks of the Loch Ness wondering if that was where Claire saw the wee monster…. LOL Do I sound like an obsessed fan? Oh, it is a beautiful country, and your story does get the feel of it- does that make sense?

Anyway – thank you for writing such great books! And one day I will finally get you to sign my copy of Outlander!

    AlysL

  90. Intriguing title! Any sort of (ballpark) estimate when it will be out? Looking forward to it.

  91. I’ve got to be honest, when I first read the title my first thought was ‘um…ok’. I was a little underwhelmed. So I’ve been rolling the title around inside my head for a while, and surprisingly, and almost against my own will, I like it. It’s a grower! I shouldn’t be surprised, I’ve loved every word Diana has written so far, so why the title took me so long to appreciate I have no idea. I can only apologise for my own literary inadequacies and pray for forgiveness from the great Gabaldon!

  92. I love the title and agree that Drums of Autumn was the weakest title in the series. Have you thought about what you would retitle it if you could?

  93. Diana,

I am ecstatically anticipating the arrival of the new book! I have read the excerpts (I couldn’t help it!) and can’t help but wonder what new adventures await our heroes!
And don’t listen to anyone who has issues with the title!

*to all* It’s her book! Duh!

Thank you for all you do!

  94. Diana,

I just can’t get enough of this series !! It is so exciting to know the new one is not that far away and now has a title. All the characters become a part of you and you wait with anticipation as to their fate. It’s certainly been a glorious ride and glad to see it continue. The last one brought a bit of home to me with Ft Ticonderoga and Saratoga in it as I live just west of Saratoga and have been to the battle field and glad that you did visit. I’ll have to go back to the Lord Jon series to tied me over until the new one arrives. Thanks so much for your great vision and talent as a writer.

  95. I’m bummed that the book wil not be finished to the end of next year! I guess I’ll have to reread the books. Btw- I like love the title! To me, it sets the precedent for Jamie and Claire’s relationship! How will it evolve now that Jaime is aware of about her dealings with Lord John. ummmm, looking forward to it!

  96. 2013? Sigh……..i had my hopes on 2012.

  97. I guess I should start off by saying how much I really enjoy your books and your writing style. But, I feel that the new title is a bit…awkward. It just doesn’t seems to roll off the tongue as well as expected from your previous titles. It’s your book and obviously you can name it whatever you please, but I thought I’d give you my honest opinion. Regardless of whatever title it ends up with, I am sure I will love book 8 since I have loved the previous 7 and reread them many times. Thank you for your excellent work and I hope to soon be reading book 8.

  98. AWESOME title! Sounds like book #8 will be very exciting and filled with more intrigue! Can’t wait for publication!

  99. I’ve read your books since discovering them in ’93. So for that I give you a heartfelt thank you! I’m such an DG junkie I now have my best friend (he’s a Marine truck driver) listening to the audio books. Love getting the phone calls from him scolding me for not telling him Roger was of Dougal’s blood, therefore related to Jamie, so how does that work for him & Bree… how much does the family tree vine. Or the calls begging for spoilers… LOVE IT! He no longer listens to his talk radio – that cuts into the audio book time! Now he’s got his wife & kid listening to them too!
Thanks again for an awesome series that draws the characters into your head like no other book has done for quite a while! Keep them coming!

  100. Just happy to hear that the eight book has officially been named. I am simply another enthusiatic fan of the series and just recently started reading it again for the eight (maybe ninth) time. I always find something new when I reread the books and I always enjoy the ride. Thanks for the incredible attention to detail and weaving the great storylines.

  101. Well, I happily gave away my 10 free copies of Outlander, and now I have 10 friends who are off to books 2 and 3! I am enjoying discussing with them, the stories all over again, and it has been so much fun! I have my worn out, and much used paper backs of the whole series, as well as my cherished hard backs that I keep put up just to look at mostly. Several have been signed by Diana, and my grand kids know that I will be willing them to one of them some day. They tell everyone about Nannies favorite books, “Oh they are all about a big red headed man in a kilt that Nannie is ga-ga over!” (LOL)
Anyway, thank you Diana for the Free Outlander’s, everyone is enjpying them very much!

    Still your number one fan!
    Deborah

  102. Well, I did my calculations the other day and I have purchased over 28 copies of ‘Outlander’ or ‘Cross Stitch’ as it is called here in Australia – for my friends, family and even complete ‘randoms’. I give them to my friends for Christmas, their birthdays, my plumbers wife, my painters wife, people I meet on ancestry research sites, anyone! The shelf stacker at my local Brisbane K-Mart told me that they sell a box of ‘Cross Stitch’ books each week! So I know that I am not the only one.
What is it about Diana’s books that turns it’s readers into impassioned ‘dealers’; desperate to ‘push’ our addiction onto others? I feel weirdly evangelical about Diana’s books at times. It feels wonderful to be able to come to the DG blog, almost like an ‘AA’ meeting, and communicate with like minded addicts.
    Greetings to all
    Antipodean Janet

    • Ditto!
Can someone please post a list, other than the favortie “7″,..of diana’s books novels , novellas short stories..? I’ve seen several titles I dont recognize..yet.

      Thanks so much

      Keep em coming Diana!

      Maria

  103. “In vernacular British English and Irish English, “The Antipodes” is sometimes used to refer to Australia and New Zealand, and “Antipodeans” to their inhabitants (see Antipodes)” – Wikipedia

Just in case you were wondering…..what Antipodean means……

    Warmest regards
    Antipodean Janet

  104. I don’t think I can wait that long – OMG 2013? I need suggestions for similar stories to keep me occupied until then! I will re-read the series has it gets closer but if I start that now I’ll be finished too soon!

  105. Can someone help me with a prayer I have been searching for in one of the books? It tugs at me and I cannot find it.

It was something along the lines of giving thanks for the animal that was taken: a life for a life
And God sacrificing his Son: a life for a a life

“A life for a life” is what I remember being repeated twice.

    Thanks for your help!

    • Do you mean the scene when they slaughter a pig and it took Roger several times to kill it? Afterwards he felt miserably and Claire thought the “gralloch prayer” might help and asked Jamie to recite it.It is in ABOSAA, chapter 71, Black Pudding, the English translation from “an ancient tongue come down from the days of the Norsemen”:

O Lord, bless the blood and the flesh of this the creature that You gave me.
Created by Your hand as You created man,
      Life given for life.
That me and mine may eat with thanks for the gift,
That me and mine may give thanks for Your own sacrifice of blood and flesh,
      Life given for life.

I googled “gralloch prayer” and found this on goodreads.com

  106. Ah, Diana – I love that you changed your career! I’ve read, re-read/listened to all 7 books and anxiously await number 8! And whether the desire for an octopus on the cover is a tie-in of all of Jamie’s family back to him or a nod to your previous career, go for it! Keep us guessing. I can’t wait to crack open the cover and lose myself in the continuing saga! I will be sadly disappointed if it does turn out to be the last one, but I’m a big girl, and I know that all good things must come to an end — well at least all NEW good things must come to an end! Love the Title – Own Heart’s Blood or Heart’s Own Blood – HOB does flow off the tongue a little easier, but it’s a very meaningful title either way! Write on in good health!

    Lori

    • Spiders have eight legs too — Oh what a tangled web we weave…

      • Dear Lori–

Yes, but I can’t put a big spider on the cover–too many people are afraid of them. (g)

        –Diana

        • A chignon, with many elegant braids?
A signet ring, with a most peculiar crest?
A hilt on a ceremonial sword, a la l’Academie Francaise?

        • Looked up arachnophobia and found stats indicating up to 90% (!) of western women are freaked out by spiders. People in some places eat the big ones, so it may be a cultural thing. Little Miss Muffet… I think snake phobias are more widespread. Mom threw a shoe at me for bringing a green snake into the house when I was about 8. An Indonesian friend squeals and shudders at pictures of snakes. Fear can be a funny feeling…

        • Diana,

I have a phobia of spiders. I’m afraid I couldn’t look at the cover when I go to buy it. :-) But buy it I will!

  107. I must say that I really don’t care what the title is! What is between the covers is what matters. Can’t wait Diana, thank you so much for providing a mini-vacation in a book!

    Sincerely,

    Devon
    Miami FL

  108. Diana,
For me it doesn’t matter what the title of Book 8 is (even – CRAP) if you write it, I’ll buy and read it again and again! Thanks for sharing your gift!

  109. What an incredibly romantic title. Diana you are without a doubt the most talented author alive today, imho! Many, many thanks for this entire story… I have spent countless hours in Claire and Jamie’s world, though I know, only a minute fraction compared to the hours you’ve spent creating it! Thanks again and I look forward, with great anticipation, to “Written with My Own Heart’s Blood”

  110. Heart’s own blood sounds so much better than own heart’s blood….own heart’s blood sounds too modern if that makes any sense! But honestly, call it Book 8….I’d still buy it!

  111. Diana,
I have read every book you have out, twice. I am so looking forward to the next book, no matter what the name of it ends up being. In the Outlander Companion, it states in there that there will be a book titled, “The King’s Farewell”. Has there been an after thought on that one, or is that not part of the series? I love the way you set the scene and describe the characters. Each night, I would tell my family that I was going to go sit down and visit with Jamie and Claire. The superb quality of the story always makes it seem like you are with them instead of reading about them. I would love to see a mini-series about Jamie and Claire!! Thank you for the time you take to keep us entertained.

  112. Diana, Please don’t end the series now. Your books have been my literary crack! :)
But I guess you have your vision and voice to listen to (please ignore them!).

  113. Maybe we could all just go through the stones 200 years in the future and the book will have already been published.

  114. I never thought a book could transport me like yours have. I started this series in June and I just finished #7 tonight and I can’t wait for #8. I love the title.

Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

    -Jaimie

  115. I am a new fan of yours, having just read Outlander for the first time about a month ago. As soon as I finished, I rushed to the bookstore to buy Dragonfly in Amber. I am thrilled to know that I have at least a dozen more novels to add to my reading list!

  116. My sister was caring for my father last summer and was reading your books. My “turn” was coming and she told me I really should read these books. It provided a great escape. I purchased the first book and when finished, couldn’t wait for the next. My next trip, I purchased all of the books and have finished with my third re-read. I’m not sure I could have waited three years between each book. I can hardly wait for #8 to come out, although I have to say I was quite disappointed in Claire for not waiting very long after she “thought” Jamie was dead before she hopped into bed with Lord John Grey. I mean really, Jamie waited seven years after Claire was gone. So, nothing is happening on the movie front? That’s too bad. You picked some good ones to play the parts. It would have been great, but then am not sure that it could be done justice – you know the saying – “the book was better”. Keep it up this series is wonderful and I’m in love with Jamie.

  117. I began this epic series back in February. A friend said she’d heard it was very good and that (at that time) I could get Outlander free for my Nook. I downloaded it and forgot about it as I had other books to read, the holidays to deal with, etc. After the first of the year – while waiting for other books to release – I decided to begin Outlander. O. M. G. I instantly fell in love with Jamie and Claire! I was reading in the house and listening in the car – and I did this with every book! When I reached the end of AEITB I was beside myself; devastated that I had to wait 3 or 4 years for the next one. If I thought it was awful having to wait six months to a year for other favorite authors to release a new book, this was horrific! I’m an old woman; I may not live much longer. (Ok, I’m exaggerating a little here, but one never knows!) I would hate to think I could leave this earth without knowing Lord John’s response to Jamie’s “Why?” at the end of AEITB! But I must admit it helps having a title to the book we’re anxiously awaiting.

  118. I started reading the books and thought it was a trilogy. Imagine my surprise when it went on and on. Don’t get me wrong it was always a good read; enticing you to buy the next book to find out what happens. Then I heard the 7th book was the last. As I approached the ending I couldn’t believe with only a few pages left you were going to have everything come to an end. Now I learn there will be an 8th book. Will this be the last in this saga?

      • Dear dd–

I don’t know. I don’t plan the books out ahead of time, so never know how much ground one will cover. But it’s not the last book until _I_ say it is! (G)

        –Diana

  119. The title is wonderful, especially with the connection to writing and publishing–which author was once quoted as saying something along the lines of “writing is simple; just sit at the typewriter and open a vein”?

Based on a caltrop being the cover art for Echo, and you desiring an octopus for Written, I suspect eight “major” story lines being intertwined: Jamie/Claire/John; Jem in the tunnel; Roger; Brian’s story (thanks to the recent spoiler excerpt); Jenny/Ian/Rachel; William/John/Jamie/Claire; Brianna; Fergus’ past/parentage (you did mention Jamie calls his adopted grandchildren his heart’s blood) and the extra story lines of Buck’s return to (hopefully) his past; Hal’s daughter’s story with Rachel’s brother (darn–need to re-read Echo if I cannot remember names LOL); the possible demise of Rob Cameron (now there’s a death you could write into the story–he’s a real chunk of nasty); and Michael’s trip to France to help with the wine business.

I’m really looking forward to “Scottish Prisoner” for another look at the Jamie/John relationship. The way all the characters and storylines interlace, you have many tales left to tell–Jamie and Claire eventually will die, but they live on in Brianna’s family story as well as in Fergus’ tale. You’ve encouraged us to love William and I personally want to see more of his life. Extending the Murrays into America and France will allow stories to carry on for many more years (anybody else looking forward to Diana’s take on the French Revolution? Both Fergus and Michael are young enough, and if Jem ends up in the past due to the stones above the tunnel…)

Well, you don’t need a novel from your readers, so I’ll close with, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart” for the experience I receive when reading your works.

  120. Hey Diana,
I like the new title, especially with its relevance to the American Revolution, the role of the press (propaganda?) in influencing the movement for rebellion, and Jamie’s intention to start printing tracts and such, after having retrieved his printing press.

    I have a suggestion for how to incorporate your octopus wishes into the book 8 cover. You’ve probably thought of this or someone else has already suggested it, but after I read your note about the title and what it means, it occurred to me that you could use the ink sacs of octopi to, perhaps, make a connection with your title (and a major theme of the book itself, I assume–i.e., Jamie being an ink-stained printer). Perhaps your cover could have an image of an octopus ejecting a cloud of ink over a printing press? Not sure of the practical applications of such an idea, but I’m sure the clever people in the art dept. could sort it. {g}
    Lynda

  121. Then again, you could just have the octopus positioned with all 8 legs outstretched (like spokes on a wheel) and let it represent this being book 8. We usually don’t understand what the picture means until you explain it to us anyway. {g}
    Lynda

  122. Ms. G. your books have saved my serenity in the last year while I was left with no income after having to leave my job due to being medically unable to perform the essential functions of the position ( examiners can’t be dosing off while proctoring). I will admit to the additional assistance of David and Leigh Eddings and Laurell K. Hamilton but since I’m a Celtic hillbilly healer whose ancestors came as indentured servants who escaped bondage, and came to Oregon so long ago we are in the Polk county museum, and have had rumors of witchcraft follow us forever. I was especially drawn to your story and I am sure I will enjoy #8 how ever you finish it if I live so long. Blessings on your head woman! You are truly a gift… I thank ye.

  123. Ms Gabaldon,
Aside from the fact that your Outlander series has dominated my reading time, again and again (have read the entire series several times), I am in awe of your fantastic creative talents which capture one’s imagination, fascinates with adventures, incidents, events, and inspires visions of romance and love which were the truth known, we would all like to experience and enjoy. You are literally a wellspring of creative writing at its’ very best. It goes without saying that you are appreciated by your many many readers and hopefully that will inspire you to keep writing into your grandma years!! Your family must be so proud of you too. Take good care of those “writing” hands and don’t ever stop writing. Thanks for the escapes your books provide from today’s often grim realities.

  124. What can I say but YAY!!!

I actually just started re-reading ‘An Echo in the Bone’ two days ago (somewhere between pg 200 and 300 atm), and I told my Mum (who introduced me to you books about eight years ago this summer) that you were writing another one, so coming here to find out that you revealed the title of the new book naturally made me grin like a little child on Christmas.
I’ve re-read your books about a dozen times by now, and while they get even better after some re-reading because I can pick up small hints and connections I did not spot during the first read a new book of yours is still a great thing, so I basically couldn’t wait for the new book since I put down ‘An Echo…’. Seeing the title revealed tells me we’re a step closer to publishing which is great. :-D

  125. We need to clone you … :-)

  126. I’ve just finished reading “A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows” which deals with Roger and his parents and am now crazed to find a sequence that occurred (I think!) in The Fiery Cross. Roger has a dream about the moment his mother dies in the tunnel during the London air raids and gets some insight that shakes him up. Can anyone tell me if I’m on the right track here? All I have is the abridged Fiery Cross audiobook so I can’t tell if that’s where this bit happened.

SO looking forward to a tip on this one! :)

    • Yes, it’s in The Fiery Cross, chapter 98, “Clever Lad”. It wasn’t a dream, though. Brianna had asked Roger if he remembered his mother (she was concerned about Jem remembering her should anything happen). Roger hadn’t ever really tried to remember his mother, had always veered away from remembering, but later gave in to the memories and let them flow…

      Is that helpful?

      • Ooh, super helpful Nancie, thank you!! I’m going to have to re-read that one. Do you also happen to know if Audible Recorded Books is planning to release the unabridged version of “The Fiery Cross” read by Davina Porter anytime soon? I’ve seen that it’s out there in other places but for some obscene amount (upwards of $85 and for cassette I think!!) but would MUCH rather pay my monthly membership fee of $16 and have a nice mp3 file for my ipod. :)

  127. I just wanted to say I like your thoughts on the title! I was also thinking, with people wondering if this is the last book or not that Jamie has 4(?) of his nine lives still. If that is the case, either book 8 will be a roller coaster ride or we are sure to see more books ;)

Thanks for creating such fantastic characters!

  128. I am extremely excited that the 8th Outlander book is coming along nicely. News of a possible 9th book (please, please, please) is… well I don’t want to jinx it. Congrats on the new Lord John book, I cannot wait to get my hands on it.
Also, I would like to thank you for helping me receive an “A” on an English paper (about a year ago). I was instructed to convince the reader why a product was worth purchasing. As I’m sure you can guess I chose your Outlander series. A simple paper that practically wrote itself and I must say I couldn’t praise your talent enough. So, thank you for the great books and the inspiration. Your books alone kindled my obsessive, love of reading.

    • P.S.
Your titles always seem to fit after reading the book. Not knowing what the title means as I open the cover is part of its allure. However if your taking votes I definately like “WIMHOB”
Huh, the acronym is kind of witchy.

    • Dear Jamie–

      Congratulation on your good grade! Always glad to be of service. {g}

      –Diana

  129. I am very excited by the title :) I read 5 of the books years ago and have just, today, finished listening to them all on audiobook… however… I can’t believe I’ve caught up and now have to wait for the next!! I have spent the last 6 months listening to Davina Porter (who does a lovely job) tell me about Claire and Jamie… how can I stand to wait!! I actually contemplated not listening to the last couple of chapters… just so it wouldn’t end.

Keep them coming! They are a fantastic blend of history and fantasy!

  130. What is Trackbacks? I’ve never seen this before…
Diana your books are a treasure, and as far as I am concerned you can keep writing about Jamie and Claire and the rest of OUR GANG FOREVER! These books have seen me through my fathers Alzheimer’s, hanging out at the nursing home ect. He passed away at 91, and he had a great life, and made up the rules as he went along, because he liked to WIN! His name was LeRoy…(and he had red hair as a kid :-) )
I’ve lost count how many times I’ve re-read…spending a lot of time at the hosp with mom now, so have you in my purse quite often…so when there is something new to read…Yahooo. Love the anticipation! Thank you!

  131. Hi Diana,
I am thrilled with the title, it has a very oath type feel to it.
I am also excited to see you in a few weeks at the Surrey writers conference!
It will be an awesome weekend!!
    Pam

  132. I like “Written in my Heart’s own Blood”. It sounds very Shakespearean.

It reminds me of the book “Interred With Their Bones” by Jennifer Lee Carrell. A very good read with present and past, lots of drama and tragedy,

I’m looking forward to the next book whatever it’s called.

BTW, did you decide whether to start “Scottish Prisoner” with Jamie or Lord John?

  133. Diana,
It’s going to be hard to wait so long for book eight. The title is interesting – I have tried to guess what’s coming with my first reading of each book by the title. Voyager was the only one that I was “right” about. I am always relieved that Jamie isn’t dead at the end of each one! I find myself hoping that there will be a long period of time for Jamie and Claire to spend in peace and loving each other. While that’s going on – Ian and Rachel, Roger and Briana, and William can have their adventures. I have hope that Jamie and William can spend some quality time together.

I love this story and trust you with Jamie and Claire et al. Thank you for an unforgettable saga that warms my heart and fires my imagination.

  134. Oh, my. It must be very gratifying that everyone is so on the edge of their seats for the next book that they are parsing every syllable of its title to try to reveal its secrets before it’s even written! Looking forward to it, surely, but take your time.

Sounds promising from the title (there I go, parsing away. . .).

  135. I just finished Echo in the Bone and was so hoping it wasn’t the last one! I’m very glad to see that you are working on another! How long till it’s finished?.. well roughly I mean knowing that with all the quirks and turns and publishers, blah, blah.. it may not have an exact date. ;)

    Jan

  136. I….Can’t…..Freakin’…..WAIT!!!!!!!!

  137. Diana
As a child my parents told me that a good book would take me on a wonderful adventure. That was an understatement. Many times have I picked up a book and lost myself in the story. I read your books and see everything happening around me. I see the story more clearing than one would if watching a movie. Not every writer has that talent but you most certainly do! I have laughed and cried over your books like it was happening right here and now. Thank you very much for the adventure so far. When you saw an octopus for the cover it made me think of Jamie and the tenttecales being his arms trying to hold everyone he loves close to him and safe. I’m sure as soon as Jamie, Claire and everyone let you know what they are up to, it will be a grand adventure!!
    Trish

    • Trish…….I second everything you’ve said about Diana and her Outlander series. I have always LOVED historical books (usually non fiction, for which I take much abuse from friends….nothing like sitting on the beach reading about the life and times of Queen Victoria!) When I stumbled on Outlander 20 odd years ago, my oldest son was about 3 and I was just pregnant with our younger son. And I found myself a hero. And my favorite hero found his soulmate in Clare. And I have never stopped being touched by all the tender moments these two share with each other and us. My husband asked me the other day what I was reading now. (I am working my way through the series again. Have just gotten stared with Dragonfly. Clare has just told Roger & Briana about Jamie.) He asked me what it was I saw in those books to keep reading them over and over. And I share with you what I told him. I have never come across another writer who writes such tender scenes. I can physically feel the pull on my heartstrings and I treasure that each and every time I read them. I can’t wait for the next book.

      • Hello Diana, Trish and Carole,

I’m a late-comer to the series, having just discovered them last February. Just started re-reading them and will (im)patiently wait for #8. Both Trish and Carole have described so well how I feel about the series and these amazing characters. They are flesh and blood to me. Perfect title for #8.

  138. I cannot wait for the new book. I picked up a few of these books at a garage sale years ago and they have been treasured by me ever since and I’ve eagerly anticipated every new addition to this amazing storyline. (How could anyone SELL them? My only thought is they must have gotten rid of their paperbacks to get hard-bound editions).

I have to say, the idea of there being a method to your writing fascinates me because it flows so beautifully and effortlessly that I can get lost in these books like very few others. I want to GO to these places and MEET these people and if this is ever made into a movie, each book would have to be a long mini-series to do it justice. I have read some fan-site stuff through the years, but this is the first I’ve ever posted anywhere for any author. I don’t know how many of these books I’ve bought to give as gifts to get other people reading them.

  139. Don’t make this your last one, please…..
We all have come to love these people and their families so much.
Can’t you keep it going somehow?

    Can’t you?

  140. Diana-
You have ruined it for all other books out there! I can’t wait for #8 (especially after all of those bombs you had dropped at the end of #7!)
No pressure, but can you hurry please? Sleep isn’t really necessary, is it? I need my fix!
    Michelle

  141. Hi Diana, I have embraced your Outlander books, love the CD and want the jewelry for Christmas.
Now something, somewhere, led me to believe this next, 8th book would finish the Jamie/Clair love story – “you will like the ending, but there will be a lot of tears”. Now I read MAYBE – we will know in a few months?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! Finish THIS series! I started reading Outlander when I was 50 years old, am now 70! I could DIE without ever knowing what happened to Claire and Jamie, if you extend their story with several more books! Couldn’t you handle other related people in a different series, as you did with Sir John?

    Yours, Adele Needham

PS My sister and I are planning a trip to Scotland soon. We want to do the Outlander tour.

  142. My husband is not much of a reader, but he loves for me to read him to sleep, a chapter a night from your books. It drives me bonkers to stop at one chapter, but I’m loving getting to draw him into my world, my love of reading, in this way. And your books are what started this cozy nightly ritual of ours. Cannot wait for the next one!

  143. Reading just that title brought tears to my eye’s, Those words are full of emotion. It didn’t feel ominous to me just Loving and emotional. (if that makes any sense at all)

Sounds like a perfect title for a Jamie, Claire and CO. book. :)

I’m am so looking forward to it being in my hand. I am missing my great friends Claire, Jamie, Brianna, Roger and Ian, Dearly :)

  144. Diana
I fell in love with the Outlander series in the summer of 2009. In the business of life I had only finished Dragonfly when in January of 2011 I was diagnosed with cancer. I have now since read all but “Echo” which I am looking forward to greatly. I am back to work and feeling better, and wanted to tell you that having Jamie & Claire with me through all my hours of treatments made it feel like I was with family.

I am Scottish in descent but have never visited. Thank you for creating this wonderful family who has brought smiles to my face and tears to my eyes. You must be quite an old soul. Whatever you title the next book I will buy it and treasure it.

  145. Diana, I dont care about the cover, you could tie it up with a string & a paper clip & I’d still buy it!
    :-)

  146. Diana ~
I purchased Outlander (when it first came out) from my book club because nothing else looked interesting and have been HOOKED ever since and am PATIENTLY awaiting book eight.
I took off work early from work one day ~ I told my boss I had to leave because my “Favorite Author” was at Copperfields Bookstore in Santa Rosa.
If you haven’t seen Diana ~ she’s beautiful!

    I have two questions:

    1. When you finished Outlander, did you already know it would be a series?

    2. In Drums of Autumn Claire is thinking about one of Frank’s lectures that she attended and has some items from the past ~ a perfume bottle and two miniatures among others items. One of Claire and one of Jamie that Brianna painted while she was in the North Carolina with them. I’m confused as to how the paintings could be with Frank and Claire before she went back to Jamie. Or am I REALLY confused about everything?

Thank you so much for your wonderful books.

    • Dear Bobbie–

Thank you! Yes, I did know when I finished OUTLANDER (though not when I started it {g}) that it was a series. As I said to my agent at the time, “I can tell there’s more to this story, but I thought I should stop while I could still lift it.”

Claire’s _dreaming_ about Frank and the miniatures. We don’t have any indication that Frank actually had them.

      –Diana

      • Thank you Diana ~

I’ve been wondering about that ever since I read BSAA and had to go back and forth several times and finally decided I had to ask you.

Again ~ THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL BOOKS!

        Bobbie

      • Claire had another dream to ponder on–

In Drums of Autumn, Claire also had a dream the night she found Otter-Tooth’s skull. She dreamed that she was lying in the rain with her throat cut. Are Claire’s dreams premonitions?

Come to think of it, Brianna has a few dreams of her own, doesn’t she?!—”her dads” dream, Jemmy being taken from her home in boston….

Makes you wonder the meaning of these nightmares!

  147. Diana,
I am counting the days until the next book!! I have loved your writing ever since I picked up Dragonfly In Amber on a whim. I even got my husband, who won’t read anything beyond the sports stats, to listen to the audio versions! I recommend your books to everyone who asks. I can’t wait to see what happens next with Jamie and Claire and all their people. Thank you so much for continuing to write about them!

  148. Ms. Gabaldon,
Really enjoy your writing. You have such a flow to your words, it’s almost mesmerizing! To my thinking, a story can have a great plot but if the words and phrases don’t sing on their own, it’s a dull read! There is probably no complement I could give you that you haven’t heard already, but I concur with all these other fine judges of good books on this page–I look forward with nearly fanatic anticipation to the continuing story! My question would be, Do you ever need to re-read anything from the previous books to refresh your own memory?

If you ever get to the “movie making” stage, could you put in a word for me? I also completely reinvented myself into a television producer about 6 years ago, (these days, that also includes-if you want to stay employed-directing, shooting and editing) and I would just love to work on such a project as yours promises to be.

    You have such a gift.

    • Dear Dianne–

Thanks! And best of luck in your new career! Alas, I have nothing whatever to say about the movie process–that’s in the hands of the production people who have the option on it.

As to previous books–no, not usually. I recall exactly what happpened, but I _never_ remember how old anyone is supposed to be, or which year things happened in, but fortunately there are a lot of folk who enjoy the collection and tabulation of trivia, so I can just ask them and they pop right back with an answer–Most Helpful of them!!

      –Diana

  149. This totally stinks for those of us with short term memory issues…if this isn’t the last book I think I will hold off for a few years and just reread all the Outlanders when it’s a completed set. :) Something to occupy me when I retire!

    • Dear Kate–

Well, there _is_ THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION–and will in the fullness of time be an OUTLANDISH COMPANION, Volume II. {g} One of the functions of those books is to serve as a recollection for those who don’t want to reread the whole series every time a new book comes out (many people _do_, God bless them {g}). But the OC has detailed synopses (plus Cast of Characters lists) for the first four books, and OCII will cover the next four, plus the Lord John books to date. (No, I don’t yet know whether Book Eight–aka WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART’S BLOOD–is the last or not.)

      –Diana

  150. Hearts Own Blood sounds wonderful to me. Can’t wait till it comes out! And…. so glad to hear it probably isn’t the last.

  151. I am 79 and hope I live long enough to get the eighth book. Also I can only listen to talking books (I have severe eye problems preventing me from reading a book). Your wonderful narrator Davina Porter is fantastic. She makes the characters come alive. Please have the next book come as a CD too as soon as it is published.

You are a genius with your descriptions and narrative. Thank you.

  152. I love the books and have read them all at least 3 times and can’t wait until the next book. Honestly I wish you did less book tours so that the wait was not so long.

  153. Diana – I found out about your books while talking to the night shift nurses at work. (Nurses usually have their own informal book clubs and they are a tough crowd). You blew them all away. The Labor and Delivery nurses talked me into trying one and somewhere around page 150 of Outlander, I realized “Oh my gosh!!! I’m in love with these characters!!! I am one of those multiple readers (I think I’m up to 3).

Just know that there is a 250 bed hospital in Texas that is staffed with some of your most avid fans!! I’m not quite sure how we’ll staff the place when the new book is released!!

My question is this….Did you have an interest in the standing stone and ley lines phenomenon before the story took shape or the other way around?

    • Dear Tammy–

No, I’d never heard of ley lines before, and all I knew about standing stones was what Stonehenge looked like. {g} Didn’t know there even _were_ other stone circles, ’til I began researching Scotland.

Give my regards to the nurses!

      –Diana

    • Okay all you ‘re-readers’. I sarted with “Outlander” when it first came out ~ and have re-read them all ~ from start to finish every time a new one comes out. PLUS ~ when I haven’t been able to get to the library and am ‘out of reading material’ ~ I will re-read them all again! I’ve tried to just read one to hold me over until I can get out, but end up reading them all again. So I’ve read the whole lot of them at least 9 or10 times! I also have “The Outlandish Companion” and will certainly get the next one(s) when they’re available.
Anyone have any “Outlander” jewelry? I have Claire’s wedding ring! Have had it since it first came out! I wear two rings ~ one that my father gave my mother in 1959 or 1960 and Claire’s wedding ring!
Talk about obsessed with people who aren’t real!?!?! BUT THEY ARE!!!!!
      Read on “Outlandish People” and on . . . and on . . . and on . . . .

    • There are many more stone circles all over Great Britain. Everyone knows all about Stonehenge because it’s fairly compact, is right on the road to Salisbury, and has a lovely gift shop. But Avebury is so large that you need a guide to show you where you are in the circle. There are actually several concentric circles there, but the outer one is miles across. It’s amazing how any of that could have been done at all, given the building materials and processes early people had.

Anyway, I love the Craig Na Dun idea — I want to drag my husband to Scotland for an Outlander tour! He’s read the first one only, but he loved the book. Now we need a North Carolina Jamie & Claire tour as well. Love your books, Diana! Keep up the good work!

Historical fiction is the best genre because you learn so much by making the people come back to life. Maybe that’s the truer essence of time travel?

  154. Great title! I have been longing for the next Outlander adventure lately. I can’t wait until this book is out!!!!

I read your information above on the Outlandish Companion I and II. I need to get myself a copy of them. I usually reread the novels when the new one comes out, or last time I listened to the audiobooks.

It’s a new test for me to recommend your books to my fellow book lovers and book club members to see how they feel about them. I can’t feel quite the same way about someone if they don’t love Outlander (or if heaven forbid, they refuse to read the book as it is “too big.”).

  155. Please, please make it the last book! I’m turning 80 in three weeks, and not at all sure I’ll be around for another after this. On the other hand, since I refuse to die before the end of the series, maybe there should be another one.

  156. Excellent title! I’m glad to hear about the printing trade/ Revolution connection- it’s a particular fascination of mine, and I was so hoping you would explore it more.
And since I’m commenting, I’d also like to say that I *love* your treatment of religion in the series. I really appreciate how well-researched it is, especially the bits with Presbyterians and Quakers.
I’m glad there are so many of us who enjoy smart historical fiction!

  157. Hi Diana, it is with regret that I have just finished re-reading all 7 books in the series (though still have the Lord John ones to go!) I loved being engrossed in the books over the past few weeks and feel a loss knowing that I have to wait for “Written in my own Heart’s Blood” to be published to see what happens next – but wait with baited breath I will. Thank you so much for your wonderful books, can’t wait for the next instalment!

  158. I listened to the Audiobook Dragonfly in Amber probably shortly after if first came out … by the end of it, I realized that there was definitely a “before” book and an “after” book. I then read Outlander … LOVED it, read Dragonfly in Amber and realized how much I had missed because the audiobook was abridged!

So started my love of Jamie and Claire and their family and friends!! I have introduced innumerable family members and friends to this series and wait (impatiently) for the next release!!! I love the new title … like all of your titles, so thought provoking! Like so many of your fans, I will reread and relisten to all your books before the new one comes out!!!

  159. Dear Diana,
I want to express how much joy, laughter and tears your book has brought me,for hours on end I can just sit,lie or slouch with one of your books and devour it.
The first time I met Jamie and Claire I fell in love with them and have been ever since.
I want to thank you for being such a gifted writer/story teller.

Written in my own heart’s blood also reminds me of the vow Jamie and Claire made when they got married..”Blood of my Blood” .

Hereby I send my Love from the Netherlands just to show you, that even over here you stole some hearts

  160. Mrs. Gabaldon,

While browsing B&N, I came upon Outlander, and made the smartest decision to buy it. That was about 5 years ago and have now read all 7, and am anxiously waiting the arrival of #8. Anyone who asks me for book recommendations instantly hears back, the Outlander series. I always say to myself, “this has to be the last one”, only to come to the end with a cliff hanger.

I love the thought of a movie or mini series, but am always disappointed when books I LOVE get the Hollywood treatment. With this series being so long and detailed, I would hate to see it butchered that way.

I just can’t get enough of the books, but know that it can’t go on forever :( . However, I will read them for as long as your creative juices flow!

P.S.- I like the title and I’m sure it fits the book perfectly (they always do). And seeing as how your the only one who knows the story… you know what your doing. I have faith ;)

  161. Diana,

Here’s an interesting thing I thought I’d share with you:

My husband (who I recently got addicted to your writing) and I were discussing this book, and he made a…suggestion…jokingly…
He says that you should autograph several of these books in your blood!
I told him that I did NOT think that was a good idea, and that there is surely a health code that would forbid such a thing.
I figured you might find it humorous in any case. :)

Hope all is well in your world.

  162. i love how most of us plan our lives around diana’s next book!

  163. I was browsing one day and found the 4th book..read the synopsis and looked for the 1st one. thought I should see if I like it before committing to the other books. .read very little and immediately bought the other 3. I love this series and can hardly wait for the next one. I have a question though.
early in the first book ,Frank sees a “ghost” of a scotsman which I assume is Jamie. When will that tie in? I re read the whole lot before a new one comes out and find that these characters have grown enough to be family memebers.

  164. a compass can have 8 points

  165. For my money, “…Own Heart’s Blood” sounds more Scots, but whatever… I know I’ll be standing in line to read it…

  166. I have been wondering when – if ever – we would ever find out what happened to Brianna, Roger and their son. Thank heavens the series isn’t over.

  167. I am new to these books – even though they are not new. I just discovered these books this summer when I went looking for a good “summer” read. I simply devoured Outlander, rushed to buy Dragonfly in Amber and thought I should pace myself. I was going to wait and buy Voyager for myself as a Christmas present – but I couldn’t wait to find out if Claire found Jamie or not! So I am now in the middle of Voyager and can’t wait to start book 4! I can totally understand why people read and reread these books!

Thank you so much Diana for writing such an amazing series!

  168. I’ve been waiting for “Wheat” to come out. That was the last name I heard for the next book. I’ve been checking the library shelf periodically for years. I sure hope something comes out soon.

    • Dear Jackie–

Wheat? Well…I don’t _remember_ that one, but not saying it wasn’t an off-the-top-of-the-head suggestion at some point. The eighth book is called WRITTEN IN MY HEART’S OWN BLOOD, though.

      –Diana

  169. Great series, Diana. How will we know when #8 is published?

    • Dear Bob–

Errr….you’ll see it in big piles in every bookstore you go in? You’ll notice me telling you repeatedly on this website? {g} You’ll hear it talked about on all the Outlander-related sites and blogs?

      Or are you angling for an engraved invitation? {g}

      –Diana

  170. What? It’s not coming out till 2013? But I might die unfulfilled before then!

  171. I purchased all 7 books on cassette and loved them. Now I want to start the series over on unabridged CDs, but am unable to find #4 (Drums of Autumn). Amazon only has abridged, Borders is closed and Barnes & Noble is “temporarily” out. Can you help with ideas of where I might purchase #4 through #5? Sure hope I can wait for #8.

  172. I discovered your books only last year and have read them all twice. I am now working my way through the Lord John Books and short stories. I love the history, romance and medicine in your books. I am a 46 year old female physician of Celtic roots who grew up on the Cape Fear River and later lived near Old Salem North Carolina! I feel very personally connected to your books . I am very grateful to you for creating such wonderful characters and placing them in such proximity to my own passions. Thank you also to your family for allowing you to pursue all of your dreams.

  173. I read all your books this summer while recovering from back surgery. Just finished the last one. When will the new one be published. I’m missing Jamie and Claire Fraser terribly.

  174. A friend started reading the Outlander series and would give me the book to read when she was done. Well, that lasted for maybe 2 of the books and then I passed her. We are both patiently (her more so than me) waiting for the 8th book. I’ve read many series but this is BY FAR the best one.

  175. I just finished reading the entire series. The last book arguably had the most EXCITING and HEARTSTOPPING ending of the entire story. I’m so ready for book 8 now. I need to know what’s going to happen with Brianna and Jem. And I’m definitely anticipating how William will handle this new revelation about his real father. One thing I was somewhat disappointed in though is Rachel and Ian ending up together. I Rachel has much more chemistry with William. Her and Ian barely had any interaction throughout the whole book so I didn’t really feel the passion with those two.

  176. I love your series!!!! I am so excited for the next one. I look forward to continuing to follow the lives of the Fraser family. They feel so real. Keep up the good work. Whether this is your last one or not I am completely stoked. I think I will be a bit sad to see the Outlander series come to an end which I suppose at some point it will. Maybe you can keep it going long enough that we can read them finish out their lives. You are a very talented writer, thank-you for sharing your gift!

  177. As soon as I wrote the above comment I wanted to undo and edit it. Finish out their lives sounded a bit morbid to me. Anyway I am completely confident that which ever way you decide to end your series when YOU are ready it will be a great ending. I have loved the past seven books of Outlander and I am starting to read the Lord John Grey series. I am also looking forward to going back and re reading Outlander from the beginning!

  178. I’m only on my 3rd rereading of the series but each time it gets better and better. I’m always amazed at how much I missed in the previous readings. I was so excited when I heard about the new book! I know it will be a good one, but I was soooo disappointed when I realized it wasn’t part of the Outlander series. I can’t wait to read Written in My Own Hearts Blood. Please, please please don’t make it the last one in the series!

    • Glenda and all who are disappointed that Scottish Prisoner is NOT an Outlander book – I think it is! It feels like it is a “missing piece”. Especially since Lord John is center stage in the story as #7 ends and #8 begins. And it’s a whole new book full of Jamie. I got an unexpected gift in this book. Thanks Diana! And all of you waiting and waiting….there’s a new book!

  179. Well I am working my way through the series for the second time, hopefully it will be out before I am done. But, I have your new book now to help me through the wait.

  180. Just finished reading the Scottish Prisoner and loved it! I was really happy to get to know Lord John a lot better and it gave me insight into a part of Jamie’s life that sadly did not include Claire. I am really looking forward to book #8 in 2013 and will be re-reading the whole Outlander series this year. Thank you Diana for writing these books and sharing them with us.

  181. I “rediscovered” the Outlander series in 2008. Years before, the last book I read was “Drums of Autumn” and I hadn’t realized that you continued with the series! I was so stunned, extremely happy, and kicking myself (rather viciously) for not checking if Jamie’s story (and Claire’s of course) has been continued. I bought “The Fiery Cross” and “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” at once. I also, mistakenly, bought a copy of “Cross Stitch” not knowing at the time that it was a re-titled “Outlander”. (I was so excited I bought any book attached to you, didn’t care if I already have a copy or not).

Ms. Gabaldon, I have a morbid confession. You’ve hinted that Book 8, published by 2013, may not be the last in the series and I am SO glad about that. Which means, Book 9 will be released sometime in 2016 or 2017. I worry sometimes — and I’m so sorry for thinking this — what if she (you, the author) isn’t able to finish the series? Will I never know what happened to Jamie and Claire? I noticed that after “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” you’ve tended to leave terrific cliffhangers (I have to live with that, I know).

Well, as Jamie told Brianna in Book 6, when she was worrying about Roger: “That is what God is for. Worry doesna help — prayer does …”

    Slante!

  182. At last!

I will not tell you how often I’ve read each of these books or why– except to say that they are the finest example of fiction I’ve read in many years, and a great teaching tool for other writers. ;-)

At the moment I’m writing an article on Voyager, which, if you wish, I will send you.

Thanks for the inspiration– don’t stop!

  183. I first bought Outlander at a Celtic Faire in Reno, many years ago. The man who talked me in to it told me I’d need it in hardback. He was wearing a Fraser tartan kilt and had a perfect accent… I still think of him as Jaime. BTW, he was right, I should have bought it in hardback. But I’ve given away probably ten copies in paper to get others as hooked as I am!

I’ll wait, Diana. You take the time you need to do your usual great job!

  184. I am an audio book junkie and very few consecutive days have passed over the last five years without listening to one. I first stumbled on this series purely because of the length of the books, and needing more to fulfill my habit. I wasn’t overly impressed with the first couple of books, but found them enjoyable. Since then, I have fallen in love with these characters. The depth of their personalities and relationships are amazing, and though I have an incurable obsession to know how every story ends as quickly as possible, I know that when their story ends I will not be happy. I will feel a loss for these fictitious inspiring people, so I’m glad this will not be the last. Davina Porter, the audio narrator is a goddess, I aspire to be as talented as her one day, when I finally fulfill my dream of being a narrator, she is an inspiration. Thank you Diana for the beautiful imagery you paint in my mind and for the 318 hrs and 27 min of history and art you have shared with me. I can’t wait to learn more.

  185. This series needs to be wrapped up.Enough is enough.Don’t get me wrong,I like the stories
I just think it needs to end while we are still able to read it.

    • Dear Karen–

Oh, don’t worry–there are lots of young readers in their teens and twenties to carry on if you can’t. [g]

(It’ll be done when it’s done. I think there are nine books altogether.)

  186. What a surprise, I just turned the last page on your last Scottish Prisoner/Lord John book to discover a new book is in the works! Will look forward to its release and can wait.

Love your books and characters, even more special since I met you in Perth (WA not Scotland).
Thank you for being a great writer and sharing your work with us here in Australia.

  187. I don’t really care what it is called, although I do like that title, I just want it finished so I can read it. There has been a definate stagnation in my reading habits because whilst everything I read is good, it’s only a fill in until the next book in the outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. For heavens sake, where are Jamie and Claire now, and what have they been up to, and do Roger and Brianna rejoin them? It’s eating away at me!

  188. I really like your blog as well. You’re funny. Well, we all know. I hope you’ll write a lot of books! I’m looking forward to reading your MOBY.

    Enjoy your writing,
    =))

  189. I absolutely love the Outlander series. I am almost through listening (to Davina Porter) for the second time around. Don’t know about any other narrator doing the series, but Davina Porter brings the characters to life! I don’t believe I would get the same experience out of reading the books. I NEED Davina Porter. I hope she narrates the next book!

Been giving a lot of thought to who should play the various characters if a movie is ever made. I have very strong feelings about Kate Winslett playing Claire. She would be perfect. she has the look. She has the intelligence, the very voice, of Claire. I think she would be able to portray the compassionate yet cool logical personality of Claire.

Jamie is tougher. Would have to be someone who could make every woman fall in love with him and every man respect him. The toughest part would be finding someone who could be fierce and confident, yet naive and gentle at the same time. If a movie is to be successful, Jamie must be believable. He must embody everything you put into the books about him. He is what makes Claire, Claire. Just saying :-)

I would love a movie series. But for now…I’m looking forward to the next book. Been worrying about Jemmie and Briana for a while now. Keep on writing! You have made my life a little more tolerable. Especially during the power outages during Hurricane Sandy. I have an old “discman” and lots of batteries.

  190. My grandson’s girlfriend introduced me to Outlander two weeks ago and told me that she only read books by female authors. Since I was out of reading material at the time I opened it, started to read, and by the end of the second chapter James Michener and W. E. B. Griffin had slipped from numbers one and two to somewhere down the list of my all-time favorite authors. Since I am one of very few men who have posted on this site, I can say without any fear at all of contradiction that these are NOT “girly books”! I have already read the first seven in this series and am halfway through Outlander again, waiting anxiously (and eagerly) for the next one, whatever you decide to call it.

Since I have passed my 75th birthday I hope I live long enough to learn how the series ends.

Diana, I salute you, Lady. You are the very best at developing your characters, because I would know any of them if they walked in my front door (most of whom would be welcome), and I am amazed at how much research you did in so many fields to write these books.

I haven’t started the Lord John Grey series yet, but will probably get them read before Heart’s Blood comes out.

Thank you so much for this tremendous obra.

    • Dear Joe–

I hope I live long enough to finish writing it. [g] One day at a time!

Appreciate the vote of confidence. I do in fact get quite a bit of mail from male readers (they’re more inclined to write privately than to post things on a public board, though many do that, too), and am always entertained to get one that says, “Boy, you sure don’t write like a woman!” [g]

      Best,

      –Diana

  191. At this time it appears like Expression Engine is the preferred blogging platform out there right now.

(from what I’ve read) Is that what you are using on your blog?

  192. Thank you diana for this amazing epic. A friend introduced me to your books as the best she had ever read~high praise i assure you! She was so right!
